The Wonderful Benefits of Coltsfoot
What Are the Benefits of Coltsfoot?
The herb Coltsfoot, also known as horsefoot, coughwort, and British tobacco, has demulcent, expectorant, and emollient properties. It also is considered a tonic. A demulcent is a substance that soothes tissues, including those that are internal. It is often used to help protect the kidneys and urinary system when taking diuretics, especially if there is any suspicion of the presence of kidney stones. An expectorant is a substance that helps to expel phlegm from the throat and the lungs. Finally, an emollient soothes, softens, and offers some protection to the skin. Emollients can be straight oils, herbal oils, and herbs. These properties along with nutritional value are what make the benefits of Coltsfoot so valuable.
Coltsfoot Benefits for Breathing Problems
Sufferers of bronchitis, asthma, and pneumonia in antiquity could not go to a doctor to be prescribed an antibiotic. These respiratory infections are so serious that you are STRONGLY recommended to go to the doctor immediately. Nevertheless, it is also highly recommended that people today ask themselves what would happen if someday they were not able to get medical attention. It would be extremely beneficial to learn of the wonderful benefits of coltsfoot. Remember, developing bronchitis and even the life-threatening lung infection, pneumonia, did not mean sure death in ancient times. The author of this article successfully used the herbs
elecampane and
garlic to make a full recovery from bronchitis and also from pneumonia. All natural God-given, medicinal plants are not weak; they are most powerful when combined with a wholesome diet and exercise. If herbs were so weak, poisonous ones could not have been employed in ancient executions in which the condemned was poisoned.
Considering that this herb is an expectorant, it is no wonder that the benefits of coltsfoot include natural treatment of respiratory problems. But, how is it used? Coltsfoot may be smoked to help relieve congestion. However, this will not agree with everyone. If you are one of those people, simply consider making coltsfoot tea by steeping for at least five minutes a heaping teaspoon of the herb in boiling-hot water. Please note that the water should not be boiling; it should just be boiling-hot in temperature; and the container should be covered. One-half cup of the coltsfoot tea is drank three times per day. Preferably, do not sweeten, but if you do, use an all natural
sweetener such as honey, stevia or agave syrup.
Coltsfoot benefits also have been enjoyed by sufferers of whooping cough as an all
natural cough syrup can be made from the herb in combination with other herbs. Those other herbs can be
elecampane and/or
horehound. While the benefits of coltsfoot are many and wonderful, sufferers of constipation might want to avoid its use.
