Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Millions of prescription drug users are finally becoming weary of the miserable and life-threatening side effects of their medications. Consequently, they are turning their attention to herbal and alternative medicine in search for all natural cures. Shamefully, many health food stores' owners are preying on the fear, desperation, and ignorance of their customers. Their complete lack of concern for the health of consumers is openly revealed by the ridiculous prices at which their products are sold, and in the advice that sales representatives are trained to give to potential buyers. That advice hardly ever encourages the use of bulk herbs.
In a small Midwestern town where the cost of living is relatively low, one health food store charges $16.99 for 200 empty gelatin capsules of size 000. Empty capsules allow consumers to easily ingest powdered herbs that are freshly ground or custom blended from bulk herbs. One of the patrons of the store asked the cashier to verify that such an exorbitant price was correct. This led to the manager personally verifying the price with the customer who responded, "Thanks for checking, but I won't pay that for empty capsules." The manager then offered to lower the price by $4.00 which is nothing short of an admission that the product had been overpriced.
Gelatin capsules are very economically produced and should never be sold for what would be charged for a bottle of capsules already filled with an herb. Another customer who was assisted before the lady who refused to be over charged, ended up spending more than $169.00 after listening to the advice of the clerks. How can consumers avoid being deceived into purchasing needed, but expensive products in health food stores? There are three very effective measures that can be taken to acquire the medicinal plants required for herbal medicine at reasonable prices.
The first step involves purchasing bulk herbs only. This means that the consumer would buy the dried leaves, flowers, seeds, bark or roots of the plant depending on the part needed. This is not only the most natural way to use herbal medicines, it's also the most economical and safest. Either an infusion or a decoction is made from the bulk herbs. An infusion is obtained by pouring a cup of boiling water over a heaping teaspoon of the plant substance. The container should be covered with a top and allowed to steep from three to five minutes. The infusion is then strained and sweetened with a natural sugar such as honey. This method is employed when working with flowers, petals or leaves. If the herb is a seed, root or bark, a decoction is required to extract its medicinal properties. A teaspoon of the plant material is gently simmered in eight ounces of water for approximately fifteen minutes. It may then be strained and sweetened in the same manner as the infusion.
Consumers can't be sure of the purity "all natural" products such as herbal tinctures and extracts, capsules, tablets and vitamin and mineral supplements. ConsumerLab.com regularly conducts independent testing on health supplements and publicly reports their findings. They have discovered some vitamin E oils that were labeled "all natural" to be synthetic oils. They've also recently found that twenty percent of the the health supplements for arthritis contained contaminants and lacked proper labeling. Encapsulated powdered herbs may not be effective once they've sat on a shelf for so long. This is especially true of ground and encapsulated cloves. It's not just a matter of the customer getting his money's worth, but also of protecting his health. Powdered cloves are extremely effective in killing the eggs of a variety of parasites, however, the powder must be fresh. There's no way to be absolutely sure of freshness unless it's ground at home, placed into empty capsules and immediately ingested.
This first measure leads to the second which involves turning to the purchase of bulk capsules. The real-life incident in the health food store previously mentioned, reveals the money that can be saved by buying wholesale. Two hundred capsules of size 000 sold at $16.99 is very expensive compared to one thousand capsules of size 00 for only $8.86. The better deal is easily found by searching for gelatin capsules at ebay.com. The web site of wholesalesupplementstore.com also sells empty gelatin capsules of size 00 for much less than they are likely to be found in almost any health food store.
There are times when an herbal tincture is the preferred form in which to ingest all natural medicines. A tincture is taken with very little water, requires no boiling of water or the use of capsules, and is kept preserved for long periods of time. They're widely available in health food stores, but they are sold at extremely high prices and may not be all natural. A tincture can very easily be made at home with only two ingredients and a little patience. Approximately four ounces of cut bulk herb is covered with a pint of vodka or gin and allowed to sit for two weeks. The mixture must be shaken daily. It should then be strained and bottled in glass containers.
These three simple measures will prove very beneficial in one's determination to return to the original and powerfully effective, all natural cures and remedies found in bulk herbs originally provided by God free of charge. Remember, it is always preferable to use bulk herbs that have been organically grown or wild crafted.
