Spiritual Psychology: What is Mental Health According to the Christian Bible?
The Definition of Mental Health
Different people will give different answers to the question, "What is mental health?" Is there, however, a definition that will satisfy everyone who is considered to be sane by the majority of the population? Most believers in spiritual psychology affirm that there is a basic definition of mental health. Terms such as "soul healing," and "spirit healing" are often used in the vocabulary of spiritual psychologists. Basically, they believe that man, in order to be the joyous, compassionate, and peaceful being he was made to be, must liberate himself from any and all things that cause disturbance in his mind.
Attaining the Goal of Soul Healing Through Spiritual Psychology
There are many techniques such as Eastern forms of meditation that are used in spiritual psychology to achieve liberation from whatever disturbs a person. However, does this liberation of the self or soul healing as some call it, really lead to inner peace? It shouldn't require a college degree to realize the need to consider what it is that caused disturbance in a person before deciding that it needs to be removed. Why? Are there ever times when disturbance is a good thing? Yes, there are. Although the biblical passage of St. John 8:3-7 is quickly quoted out of context in defense of sin, the ninth verse is important to this subject as it speaks of the low-level, but powerful way through which every individual, regardless of whether he has ever heard the gospel or not, has known God--the conscience that was put in him. To be convicted in one's conscience is to have a guilty conscience; in other words, it is to be disturbed and without peace. This kind of disturbance is exactly what was needed to stop the people mentioned in the passage from killing. St. John 8:9 reads, "And they which heard it (Jesus' words), being convicted (disturbed) by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst."
Some people are disturbed because they have suffered traumatizing events and injustice of all kinds in their life. Others, however, cannot find peace because they are among those who have traumatized others or have committed injustice against someone else; they have a guilty conscience which disturbs them. To follow the philosophy of spiritual psychology across the board to achieve "soul healing" runs the risk of reaching a state of freedom from a conscience or the voice of God which will eventually cease to talk if it is constantly rejected. This leads to a condition known in the Bible as a seared conscience (I Timothy 4:1-2). Those who have a seered conscience are capable of the most vile acts because there is no longer a buffer in their mind.
Mental Health According to the Christian Bible?
The definition of mental health is found throughout the scriptures and the reader will quickly see that freedom from disturbance does not always lead to "soul healing," but rather can lead to the disappearance of that inner voice that teaches man right from wrong on at least a basic level. When guilt or disturbance sets in after doing wrong, it is a good thing to repent. When guilt or disturbance sets in while contemplating wrongdoing, it is a good thing to refrain from those plans before they lead to action. This is not a disturbance from which anyone should want freedom because to obey the conscience so that it may be clear is in itself liberty and true peace. Those who truly walk with Jesus can identify with his word that says, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Timothy 1:7).
