The Bible On Mental Health

brain.gif

Sadly, very few people are aware of the sound teachings on the subject of mental health offered by the Bible. Fortunately, such advice is free of charge, easily implemented, and reliable having stood the test of time. Depending on the problem in question, results may be obtained literally within hours. It should be kept in mind that biblical scripture, unlike Psychology, places all forms of mental illness from paranoia to schizophrenia in only 2 categories: disorders of the mind (soul) or disorders of the spirit. Understanding of the difference between the two classifications requires a concentrated study of the Bible, particularly the New Testament.

Self-study is encouraged to help guard against indoctrination by proponents of any particular denomination. Referrals by friends, family, and strangers to churches or ministries should be given very careful consideration. Is the friend or family member who's giving the advice mentally stable himself? Does the adviser show any signs of hostility against the Bible or Christianity? Had he offered any helpful advice previously? Is the individual simply recruiting members for the church to which he belongs? These are just some of the questions that one should ask himself before following someone else's advice.

Controlling Identity Through Thoughts

Many have heard the saying "you are what you eat." The phrase refers to the need to choose healthy foods for consumption if a healthy body is desired. If health destroying foods are eaten, the inevitable consequence is the development of illness, disease, and a possible premature death. Just as physical food nourishes or harms the physical body, one's thoughts are spiritual food that nourishes or harms the mind and eventually the spirit. This is precisely why the biblical scripture of Proverbs 23:7 warns, "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he...."

Thoughts, if entertained any length of time, have the power to alter the mood, kill or revive hope, comfort or torment, and compel or restrict the taking of action. This truth is demonstrated throughout the Bible and is one of which the Lord Jesus reminded when he taught, "...Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart" (KJV, Matthew 5:28). The heart is the seat of a man's thoughts that, if not placed under control by the thinker, will take control of him. Neither adultery nor any other harmful action can be carried out without having first been a thought. This fact is so serious that even thought can be sin before God as demonstrated in the scripture of Matthew and confirmed in Proverbs 24:9 which teaches that, "The thought of foolishness (sin) is sin". This is why the apostle Paul admonished Christians to bring every thought captive to the obedience to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).

How can a person control his identity through his thought? First, it should be understood what is meant by "identity". Thoughts, no matter how strongly they are entertained, will not turn a falsehood into truth. If someone wants to be a great singer, but can't or won't learn to carry a tune, he'll never be able to think himself to stardom as a vocalist. In fact, such attempts will only leave him delusional.

There's another identity that can be controlled by the thought process. This identity defines the type of person someone is, not their name or rank. One can be a pessimist that sees the glass half empty or an optimist that sees it half full. This is a thought process. He can consider himself a failure after suffering loss or he can see himself a fighter that will again stand up. This also is a thought process that will lead to action or cause inaction.

These truths are not to be confused with what motivational speakers often call "the power of positive thinking". The web site of Heavenly Manna Ministries, offers free of charge 2 very enlightening articles on this subject: "Success By Positive Thinking Or Faith In God?" and "Is Faith In God Of Any Value?" The web ministry also offers studies on a variety of topics and questions rarely discussed in the average church.

Ridding The Mind Of Monsters

Jealousy is referred to as the "green-eyed monster" because of the ugly acts it has driven so many to commit against family, "friends", and total strangers. The secular world does right in labeling envy as a monster. This is not an overstatement considering that the Bible uses no less harsh language when envy is the subject. The biblical scripture of Proverbs 14:30 declares that, "A sound heart (mind) is the life of the flesh, but envy is the rottenness of the bones." Scripture, plainly compares a sound mind to the life of the flesh and jealousy as rottenness. There can be no peace of mind for anyone who harbors envy against another.

There's no abnormal thought, behavior, mental illness, or disturbance for which the Bible doesn't offer strong counsel to be followed. The goal and the reward is the peace of a healthy mind and a clean heart.

Those who truly desire heavenly counsel must be prepared to seek diligently, but patiently. He must be willing to accept what the Lord says is good for him. Likewise, he must be ready to give up and to let go of what God says is bondage and a hindrance to his full recovery.

The Final Conclusion: A Choice To Make

Although this type of counsel is not what will be heard from trained Psychologists, it is heard when the scriptures are read and obeyed. Sometimes biblical counsel is rejected but Isaiah 30:1 reads, "Woe to the rebellious children saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of (from) me...."

The Third Man by Angela Sheffield Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
