Is Alternative Medicine A Good Choice For Everyone?
Fortunately, many North Americans have grown weary of the harm that being treated by traditional medical doctors can cause. Among the fatal problems from which millions suffer are diseases such as chemotherapy-induced leukemia, severe burns from radiation treatment, and permanent damage to organs caused by anesthesia. While it's illogical to expect modern medicine to be practiced with perfection by even the most experienced physicians, it's just as illogical to reject alternative medicine and continuing placing unquestionable trust in a very flawed system.
Numerous Americans have been forced to turn to alternative medicine after receiving a death sentence from their doctors. Others simply preferred all natural treatments over chemical ones. Some who sought natural cures did not survive; others have amazing testimonies of recovery. What went wrong in the cases of those who didn't survive? Was their condition too far advanced? Each scenario is different; therefore, there's no such thing as one concrete answer for every case of sickness. However, there are some fundamentals that every individual considering alternative medicine should know for their own safety. First, the sad reality surrounding alternative medicine is that few people who are turning to it really know what they're doing. The early Americans had only the herbs of the land as their medicine and wholesome, organically grown foods to eat. They learned about the plants of the new world from the Native Americans they befriended and continued to gain their own knowledge as they settled in their new home. Knowledge of how to use medicinal herbs to treat sickness and disease was passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, most of today's Americans must relearn the treasure of information their forefathers possessed.
The major problem with this lies in the fact that many attempt to use natural medicines and diets that they don't really understand. The heightened interest in all natural medicines and diets coupled with the lack of understanding has opened the door to the spreading of bizarre health claims. When these claims are believed and acted upon, they often lead to disastrous results and a loss of hope in alternative medicine. Consequently, attacks against proponents of alternative medicine have increased by people who've had bad experiences and by traditional medical doctors. How can the public without medical training determine which claims to believe and which ones to reject?
Although this may appear difficult, it's actually quite simple to begin learning when to be suspicious and when to be eager to learn more.
One Cure All
Health claims stating that one particular substance will prevent and/or cure cancer should be vehemently rejected. Some fanatics have stated that if a person maintains ample amounts of calcium in his system cancer cannot develop. All books, articles, fliers and pamphlets on the subjects of nutrition, vitamins, or minerals written by licensed physicians, nurses, dieticians and nutritionists have one thing in common. Professionally trained and licensed health care professionals know the importance of balanced nutrition. This doesn't mean that their dietary advice is always sound, but it does always stress that health can't be maintained if the body is continually deprived of any of the nutrients it needs. Ingesting high levels of any one vitamin or mineral, especially if that vitamin or mineral is synthetic, can actually increase the probability of developing cancer.
There's no one substance that will protect the body from cancer, disease and sickness when it's continually abused by habits such as smoking, drinking, and eating denatured foods.
Not at Any Cost
Supposedly "all natural" health potions that are sold at very expensive prices should also raise suspicion. Again, in times past, people gathered herbs from the field to make their medicines. They made infusions and decoctions from these bulk herbs. An infusion is made by pouring approximately eight ounces of boiling water over a teaspoon of the herb. This is the usual method for naturally extracting the medicinal properties of leaves and flowers. A decoction is made by simmering a couple of teaspoons in sixteen ounces of water for at least fifteen minutes. This method of natural extraction is employed when the part of the plant used is the root, bark or seed. Simmering is required for these harder substances.
Some herbs were smoked, but only for very short periods of time; others were used to make poultices. The important point is that their health care was very inexpensive. Although it's no longer possible for everyone to have such free access to herbs in the field depending on where they live, all natural medicine should still be very economical because it is very simple. When employing herbs in the treatment of disease, cancer, and sickness, bulk herbs should be used in the same manner they were in the past. The dried parts of medicinal plants are the truly natural forms of alternative medicine which at one time was the only medicine the world knew. Consumers would do well to insist on purchasing herbs in bulk and refuse to be persuaded to buy expensive mixtures, tinctures, extracts, and pills that are recommended by sales clerks.
Heed Warning Signs
Those who are interested in alternative medicine are advised to educate themselves on the subject of herbs. They would do well to know the possible toxicity of various herbs and to start with the use of the mild herbs such as chamomile, peppermint, and catnip. In the event that headaches develop, use of the herb should cease until further investigation can be done. The headache may indicate that a beneficial cleansing is taking place; it may also be a symptom of toxicity.
Focus On Physical Health
America's fascination with practices from the Eastern hemisphere has also complicated the problem of alternative medicine. The practice of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, acupuncture, acupressure, and various other spiritual "arts" have interfered greatly with achieving recovery from sickness and disease.
The author of this article once spoke to someone who underwent acupuncture to treat her allergies. The treatment produced wonderful results only to cause inexplicable and life-threatening health complications that the woman's doctors could not control.
