Is Smoking a Sin?
Of course no one can find a scripture in the Christian Bible that says something like "Thou shalt not smoke cigarettes or cigars." God's word was recorded for all generations, every culture and every time period (1 Peter 1:25). It's no wonder that much of our instruction in righteousness refers to actions and mind sets in descriptive terms instead of specific ones because language is ever changing. So, what do the scriptures reveal when answer the question, "Is smoking a sin?"
Cigarettes Kill, Steal and Destroy
Ample proof has been provided of the health-destroying effects of smoking, especially modern, commercially manufactured cigarettes which are unlike the natural tobacco that was traditionally smoked in times past. When answering the question, "Is smoking a sin?", other questions should be raised and answered to come to the biblical conclusion. Do cigarettes kill? The answer to this question is already well known--yes! Not only do they kill the smoker, they kill other people who are exposed to second-hand smoke. Among these other people are children.
Does smoking steal anything? Smokers are robbed, or rather they allow themselves to be robbed of healthy lungs, good health, and clean air while robbing others of the God-given right to breath air in its original condition. Does smoking cigarettes destroy a good thing? Healthy lungs are a good thing from God and they are literally destroyed as the entire body is robbed of sufficient oxygen while being poisoned with toxins. Cigarettes kill, steal and destroy. What was said of the thief, the arch enemy of
Christ? St. John 10:10 says, "The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy..."
Is smoking a sin? What are the answers to the questions: Is God pleased when his servants smoke cigarettes and destroy the lungs and health he gave to them? Is he pleased when they pollute the air he gave everyone, including the unrighteous, to breath? Answers to these questions are obvious. But, what about the habit? Should the Christian believer expect God to miraculously liberate him from the strong hold of cigarette smoking? Non-Christians remind that only when the desire to quit smoking is greater than the one to remain comfortable will a person succeed in ceasing to be robbed of good health and to kill and destroy himself, which is nothing short of a form of bondage. To be controlled by anything that is directly influenced by the kingdom of darkness is a form of bondage. The thief steals, kills and destroys and cigarettes steal, kill, and destroy. The connection with the influence of the kingdom of darkness is evident--a connection from which every true believer should yearn to be free.
