Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Obese individuals who desire to lower their weight, smokers who desire to abandon their habit, and gamblers who are out of control are among the people who seek deliverance from their vices. A number of methods, strategies, treatments, and advice is offered and promoted in various ways to people wishing to overcome bad habits or destructive lifestyles. Why do many of these individuals remain in the grip of what controls them? Given that there are so many different scenarios and situations, obviously, no one answer could suffice for all. Some are not tired enough of being captive to their vice, some are willfully blinded to the fact that they have the problem. Others lack the will power to take extreme measures that are sometimes necessary to achieve success, and others are truly at a loss for how to be free. Their situations are unique and beyond this article.
The different personalities of people will draw them to various methods for conquering the strong holds in their life. What are some of these methods? Varying forms of hypnosis, medications, denial, and attempts to encourage acceptance instead of rejection of the problem to eliminate the need for will power to overcome. But, can it be said that any of these methods effected genuine and permanent change? Can reliance be placed on any of these strategies regardless of what kind of problem it is that needs to be overcome? Undoubtedly, some will answer that question in the affirmative. However, simple observance of American society reveals that these methods can't be the effective solutions that many publications claim they are. Obesity is a growing problem, smokers who would like to kick the habit, continue to endanger their health and that of others through second-hand smoke. Compulsive gamblers continue to sink deeper into financial troubles. These facts surrounding real-life situations greatly outweigh and outnumber the number of temporary success stories. It appears that when will power to overcome is lacking, the void can't simply be filled with modern methods of conquering bad habits and destructive lifestyles.
One method for conquering strongholds in life is practically never promoted or discussed. Although some will immediately reject it and in doing so remain with their problem, there are those who will accept and be forever grateful for their victory. What is this method or advice? Is it something that everyone can do? Does it require will power?
A good number of Christians will often speak of the great power of God to help man overcome harmful things in his life. But, rarely are the steps and requirements for success pointed out and they are hardly ever stressed. Consequently, few people experience any more success in certain areas of their life even after they've turned to God.
The secular world will remind that "where there's a will there's a way," and that "necessity is the mother of invention." The first saying speaks of the greatness of will power--so powerful that it will find a way out of no way. The second speaks of necessity. It is necessary to stop smoking to if a person wants better health for himself and those around him. It is necessary to control one's diet and to exercise in order to achieve the weight a person desires. It is necessary to be delivered from compulsive gambling to reduce risk to his financial situation. Will power and necessity work together to work wonders.
There are no short cuts, "back roads," "loop holes," or easy ways out of some habits. This isn't what many want to hear, but it stands true. This is why the Bible speaks of what's known as a good "fight" of faith (1 Timothy 6:12). The word fight is used to remind the believer of the vital part that his own will power plays in his deliverance. The New Testament scripture of Hebrews 12:4 answers many who question why they remain without change when it says, "Ye have not resisted unto blood, striving against sin."
True friends can be very supportive in whatever your struggle may be, accept their help and encouragement and that that comes even from well-meaning strangers who know how hard the fight of faith in God can be because they've been there themselves. And when you are free, you will be able to help and encourage someone else.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
