What Are the Benefits of Horehound?

Horehound, also known as White Horehound, like all of the wonderful, healing herbs provided by God, has been successfully used by man to treat health problems for millenia. Unfortunately, much valuable knowledge about all natural medicine was lost as people turned their backs on the remedies that had served them for so long and embraced harmful, man-made prescription medications. Consequently, the benefits of horehound and so many other herbs have to be rediscovered.
A Brief Overview of the Benefits of Horehound
Horehound is a diaphoretic, tonic, expectorant, hepatic, and stimulant. A diaphoretic is a substance that produces perspiration. Tonics encourage function of the various systems of the body. Expectorants expel mucus from the throat and lungs. A hepatic benefits the liver; and a stimulant encourages healthy circulation. These are not all of the benefits of horehound, but they are among the most important ones.
The leaves are the part of the horehound plant that are used in alternative medicine. Generally, a heaping tablespoon of the dried leaves are allowed to steep covered in boiling-hot water for approximately five minutes. The water should not be boiling; it just should be boiling hot. The tea, also known as an infusion is then strained and drank, preferably, without sweetener. If a sweetener is desired, opt for an all natural one such as honey, stevia, or agave syrup.
What are the benefits of horehound in regard to specific health problems? Cough, including severe cough, and lung infections have been treated with horehound, which is generally used in combination with other healing herbs. Pulmonary infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia should be considered life-threatening and medical attention from a doctor should be obtained. That does not mean that horehound and other herbs for respiratory infection are not effective. On the contrary, the author of this article successfully recovered from bronchitis and also from a bout of pneumonia using a combination of elecampane and garlic in conjunction with a very strict diet. No prescription medication at all was taken.
Sadly, most people are not disciplined when it comes to their health; and few have the knowledge they need to rely on the benefits of horehound or any other herb in the face of serious illness. The fact remains, however, that people in antiquity, just as many people today, still rely on herbal medicines. Although they avoid most of the health problems seen in the United States today because of their healthier lifestyle, they are not always spared suffering from respiratory problems such as bronchitis and even pneumonia.
Also, how many people ever stop to question what they would do if they were not able to get to a doctor. A healing herb could be right within their reach and they would not know it. That is truly sad, because the Lord provided many healing herbs offering wonderful benefits such as the benefits of horehound.
