Folk Medicine and Herbal Remedies That Don't Work
Is Folk Medicine Effective?
I'd first like to say that I'm a very strong supporter of alternative medicine and herbal remedies having personally witnessed and played a major role in my own mother's all natural cure from breast cancer. Neither chemotherapy nor radiation was employed in her treatment. In fact, no prescription medication whatsoever was taken. Drastic diet changes were made along with a very demanding treatment consisting entirely of herbal medicines, medicinal foods, and other age-old and time tested practices. Her tumor began to shrink within three days and was too small to be palpated by the seventh day of treatment after which we focused heavily on the recovery she needed. That was more than fifteen years ago and today she is healthier than most people in their 30's. I've recovered from pneumonia using nothing but herbal medicines such as
Elecampane and wild black cherry root along with diet restrictions, and have experienced and witnessed the power of herbal and folk medicine to treat and cure a number of health problems that supposedly require surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and other expensive and dangerous medical interventions.
In no way am I saying that traditional medicine is of no value; I'm an emergency medical technician (EMT), a field in which I can greatly appreciate the technological advances that have been made in the medical field. What I am saying is that there's way too much sickness, disease, and cases of
cancer in America and much too much reliance upon traditional medicine. People are literally being drugged with numerous medications to treat conditions that God's medicine (herbs and medicinal food) can not only treat, but also prevent. What's even more amazing is the fact that people are not taking the time to ask questions about why practically everyone should expect to develop cancer. I see this as nothing but an attempt to condition the mind to accept as normal what is so very abnormal. Such a thought should never be entertained.
Herbal Remedies That Might Not Be Effective
When you hear the names of certain herbs, you usually hear the same claims over and over. However, I haven't found many of the most well known claims to be true. This doesn't mean that you won't have a good experience with them. The folk medicine and herbal remedies I mention here are for minor health problems only and are fairly mild herbs. I don't want to dissuade you from trying them, I'm just giving my opinion and sharing my experience how they worked or didn't work for me or for someone I know.
Dandelion Root for Acne and Other Skin Problems
Dandelion root is hailed as one of the best herbal remedies for clearing up acne, eczema, and other skin problems; I simply have not found this to be true for myself or anyone else. I've experienced much better results with an herb called Burdock (the root is used). There are many health reasons to drink dandelion root decoction; however, I've just not found the treatment of skin problems to be one of them. One important thing to keep in mind is that no health problem can be cured by some miracle drug whether chemical or not as long as the body is deprived of the nutrition it needs and/or exposed to toxins in the form of food preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, etc.
Sage for the Regrowth of Hair
I once read a book that claimed that sage tea, yes tea made from the culinary herb sage, poured over the hair on a regular basis will "make hair grow even if the roots have been damaged." I don't know of anyone who can say that this claim is true and there are a lot of people out there who'd be willing to give just about any product a try to regrow their hair. Other herbs that might be more effective include mullein leaf tea for dry and brittle hair, nettles tea to help stimulate growth, and jaborandi leaf tea poured over the hair several times a week truly helps to moisturize, strengthen, and stimulate the roots to produce healthy hair.
Catnip Tea for Minor Aches and Pains
Catnip is claimed to be a
mild pain killer; I must say that it appears to be so mild that if it relieves your discomfort, you probably weren't that uncomfortable in the first place. A better alternative to chemical medication, in my opinion, would be to drink a strong and very hot cup of wintergreen tea. If you take about a tablespoon of vinegar just before drinking a cup of wintergreen tea, you'll have an all natural salicylic acid or aspirin which is much more effective folk medicine or herbal remedy for relieving discomfort.
Clove Oil for Tooth Ache
This is one of the herbal remedies that usually tends to work well or not at all. It's one of those love-it-or-hate-it folk remedies that might or might not work for you. It's certainly worth a try. However, I've found that an ice pack held to the outside jaw area of the problem tooth is a most effective way to find relief from a
toothache.
The herbal remedies of
alternative medicine can be amazing in their power to restore health, fight against disease, and prevent sickness, but effective use of them requires knowledge. Among some of the best books on the market teaching the beginner herbalist how to use God's medicine chest are:
1. Back To Eden (new revised edition) by Jethro Kloss - I dismiss the author's erroneous teachings on the so-called health benefits of vegetarianism.
2. Herbally Yours by Penny C. Royal
3. The Way Of Herbs by Michael Tierra, C.A.,N.D. - I dismiss the author's promotion of belief in mysticism.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
