Home Made Herbal Medicines in Pill Form
Christian Food for Thought:
God is the creator of the many wonderful medicinal plants and foods that prevent, treat, and cure so many ailments. To reject God's solutions is to reject
spiritual, physical, and
mental health.
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in HEALTH even as thy
soul prospereth" (KJV Christian Bible, 3 John 2).
Although in times past herbal medicines were traditionally prepared as an infusion or decoction (tea) to be drank, sometimes they were applied externally or made into herbal pills. This involved the making of all natural liniments, salves, poultices and even all natural cigarettes to be smoked. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the people of old even knew how to make their herbal medicines into the same convenient form so readily available today--pills.
Although herbal medicines drank as a tea are generally still the very best way to ingest the healing substances found in the plant material, it's not the only method. It's also not the most convenient way to take all natural herbal medicines while traveling, when short on time, or when there's the desire to avoid a bad tasting herb.
Michael Tierra, C.A., N.D., in his book The Way of Herbs, brilliantly instructs the reader how to make real home made herbal pills. There are only three simple ingredients needed to make an herbal pill: the powdered herb itself, water, and a mucilaginous powdered substance. Slippery elm powder is one of the very best mucilaginous powders to use which is specifically for holding the medicinal herb together in pill form. It behaves like a natural glue when a little water is added.
The main and medicinal herb to be made into a pill must first be in powdered form. It can be coarsely ground and still be easily formed into a pill. A strong coffee or spice grinder can handle most herbs for this part of the process. The amount powdered depends on the number of pills to be made. To the powdered herb is added a little of the slippery elm powder (about ten percent of the mixture) or the mucilaginous herb of choice and stirred thoroughly. Finally, water is very slowly added to the mixture and stirred in to obtain a doughy consistency. Herbal pills are made from this "dough" by molding them to the size and shape of one's choice.
The pills may be taken immediately or they may be gently and slowly dried by leaving them exposed to warm air or by drying them in an oven on the lowest setting. Once dry, they should be bottled in plastic or glass that, preferably, is dark. These herbal pills tend to be half the dosage of a gelatin capsule so it may be necessary to take two pills to equal the dosage of one capsule (Michael Tierra, C.A., N.D., The Way of Herbs [New York, NY: Pocket Books, 1989],32-33).
What are some of the best herbal pills to make? That depends on the condition being treated. Headaches are very commonly caused by stress nowadays and many would like to take an herbal aspirin? Is there an herb that actually has the properties of aspirin? Yes, there is; it's called Wintergreen, an herbal medicine that actually contains salicylic acid.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
