Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The mystical beings with which participants in role playing gaming frequently interact include, but are not limited to: vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks, wizards, sorcerers, priests, charmers, fairies, gargoyles that come to life, zombies, fortune tellers, and aliens. Are witches, warlocks, vampires, sorcerers and the like, considered evil in the Bible?
The scripture of Deuteronomy 18:10-12 is very important when discussing fantasy role playing games from a Christian view point. It says, "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire (offer in sacrifice) or that useth divination or an observer of times (fortune telling) or an enchanter or a witch or a charmer or a consulter with familiar spirits (demons) or a wizard or a necromancer (one who talks to the dead). For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord."
Since these evil creatures are only in a virtual world in role playing gaming, unlike those mentioned in the scripture, how can they pose any threat being only representations of evil beings?
God makes it plain that he takes representations of spiritual matters very real and even declares them as official. The image of a being is a representation of him and his power and is so closely connected to him that he can literally be accessed, honored, obeyed and worshiped through and by his image. The examples of this in scripture are exhaustive. And this is an extremely important truth when speaking of role playing gaming from a biblical perspective. God commanded the absolute destruction of any and all images and pictures of any kind of evil being (Exodus 23:24, Leviticus 26:30, Numbers 33:52, Deuteronomy 7:5, 2 Kings 23:24, Jeremiah 8:19). This commandment covered the utter destruction of carvings, paintings, molten images, sculpted figures, and statues.
Therefore, whether it's a question of electronic graphics, holograms, avatars, or any other modern form of imagery such as in role playing gaming, the message is the same. This is why the Bible says, "...there is no new thing under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). The format may change but it's nothing new that God's word didn't forsee from the beginning of time.
An image is a form of virtual reality that becomes reality. In the New Testament book of Revelation, information is given about the the Anti-Christ, false prophet and the beast who compose the unholy trinity which is to come to deceive all who choose to reject Jesus.
And he (the second beast) deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in their sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image of the beast which had the wound by a sword and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed (Revelation 13:14-15).
Later in Revelation 14:11, scripture warns that, "...the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever and they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image....
God always commanded his servants to destroy every image of what he calls an abomination, in whatever form it appeared. He did so not only in his supremacy but also to protect his people from falling under the influence of the very real spiritual beings that give diabolical life to their images. Are we to think that the images in role playing gaming are any less significant to God?
One might rebut that gamers don't become idolatrous simply through their participation in role playing gaming. But, what is idolatry? God said not to have any gods before him. When man puts his own word before God's, he elevates himself above the one he is to worship. Remember, there's no new thing under the sun. Idolatry is just as prevalent today as it was in ancient times. It may have a new form in the industrialized nations, but it's no less harmless than it's historical equivalents. Role playing gaming is not harmless, insignificant or "neutral" in the eyes of God.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse. Okay. I agree with point that anything that is set in the world WITHOUT God is idolatrous and should be avoided. This includes 100% of fantasy and 90% of S-F.
May I ask you about your opinion about for example RPG is set in world which HAS PLACE for God? I mean for example modern world, and
a) Player when playing ( for example imagining himself as leader of county ) does what he thinks is right before God and CAN exclude it from reality.
And b) Is it evil to watch any form of fiction? Didn't even you imagined yourself as someone else in your childhood?
Well. Characters we like HAVE some influence over us.
God bless

Well, ark of covenant had two cherubim ( which ARE spiritual beings ) graved on it. But I mostly agree with you. I love fiction, but not Godless fiction.

To Cornelius:
No, we do not believe that there is anything wrong with watching some fiction. It depends on the specific fiction piece. Our Lord Jesus taught spiritual truths through parables, which might be considered "short fiction stories." The role play games about which the article is about are those that are undeniably related to the occult, and are a promotion of the occult.
