Young Adult Paranormal Romance: A Christian Perspective based on the Bible
What Is Young Adult Paranormal Romance?
Paranormal romance books for teens are works of fiction that might be called love stories--with a twist. That "twist" is that the stories are not of natural love, but one of the mixing of the natural and the supernatural. The couple is composed of a teenaged boy or a teenaged girl who is romantically involved with a departed spirit, a ghost, an alien, a fairy, an angel, or a creature that is half man and half spirit.
There is no end to the imagination that is put into these books. The works are written to entertain teenagers. Therefore, they are called young adult paranormal romance novels. But, are they written simply to entertain young minds or to supernaturally influence their minds? What light does the Christian Bible shed on that question?
Paranormal Romance Books for Teens: No New Thing
We might think at first that young adult paranormal romance books are a new thing of this modern day and age. However, the word of God teaches us that, "The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done. And there is no new thing under the sun (in this world). Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us" (KJV, Ecclesiastes 1:9-10).
The scripture of Ecclesiastes is not referring to things such as the invention of the airplane, the rocket, or television. Those things are new, but the purpose for which they were invented is not new. The concepts behind their invention are not new. Man, since the dawn of time, has sought to travel, including space travel, and to entertain himself. Tangible items are just the product of the imagination of man. The same can be said of young adult paranormal romance novels or mystical romance works for adults.
Mystical Romance in the Christian Bible
One article cannot be an exhaustive Bible study on the diabolical messages promoted in young adult paranormal romance works. Nevertheless, it can introduce a few of the many biblical truths that speak on the subject. The scripture of Genesis 6:1-2 says, "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair, and they took them wives of all which they chose."
The sons of God are angelic beings, which means that they are spiritual beings. They do not belong to mankind. Jesus was called the son of man and the Son of God, because he was truly man, and he was truly God. Biblical scripture says that, "Jesus was made a little lower than the angels..." (Heb. 2:9). Man is a little lower creature than angels. This is just one scripture that reveals that they are not man. They are a supernatural life form that was created by the Lord before man was created. They often are referred to in scripture as the "sons of God" (Job 38:7).
Returning to the subject of young adult paranormal romance, scripture speaks of angels taking the "daughters of men" (mortal women) for wives. The Bible goes on to say that, "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth..." (Gen. 6:4-5).
The sons of God, or angelic beings, fathered children with mortal women. Those children, being half angel and half man, were different in that they grew to be giants and they were renown for wickedness. What happened? Paranormal romance took place! And, it was wicked in the eyes of the Lord. Young adult paranormal romance works seeks to promote an old and diabolical plan--to encourage an unnatural and unholy union between man and spiritual beings.
