Dangers of the Paranormal
A Definition of the Paranormal and the Occult
Things that cannot be explained scientifically belong to the paranormal, which is also referred to as the metaphysical, supernatural, unearthly or the transcendent. The occult, on the other hand, refers to that which is hidden or secretive usually as in hidden knowledge or knowledge from a secret source. The two often go hand in hand because those who practice the occult, even superficially, almost always have paranormal experiences beyond what those who don't practice the occult tend to have. Things that cause an individual to be involved with the occult and demonic paranormal experiences include, but certainly are not limited to practice of any form of magic, development of psychic abilities, ghost hunting and busting, and attempting to contact the deceased.
Dangers of the Paranormal in Old Testament Times
Among the numerous Old Testament scriptures that teach God's commands to Israel against the paranormal is the passage of Deuteronomy 18:10-12, which warns and speaks of the dangers of the paranormal. God said, "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire (be sacrificed to idol gods) or that useth divination (black or "white" magic) or an observer of times (fortune teller) or an enchanter or a witch or a charmer or a consulter with familiar spirits (a medium) or a wizard or a necromancer (someone who talks to the dead) For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord..."
The dangers of the paranormal are numerous and they are specific, but they are summed up in the truth that the practice of the occult leading to the paranormal experiences listed in the above-mentioned scripture is an abomination to God. Dedicated students of in depth Bible study will also take note of the warnings issued in Joshua 6:18 where God told his people, "And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed when ye take of the accursed thing and make the camp of Israel a curse and trouble it." We are taught and reminded that cursed objects are a reality and that taking them into our possession can sometimes bring a curse into our life, causing us to be mysteriously troubled.
Are Dangers of the Paranormal Mentioned in the New Testament?
Some people will dismiss the warnings concerning the practice of the occult and the dangers of the paranormal contained in the Old Testament. However, it's not logical to think that the unholy spirits behind such practices have ceased to exist and to carry on their work of deception in modern times. What's more is that the strong warnings against willful involvement with the occult and the paranormal are just as strong in the New Testament scriptures.
The Bible uses various terms and symbols to refer to sin, one of them is: the works of the flesh. The apostle Paul warned, "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft..." (Galatians 5:19-20). Witchcraft is the practice of the occult that always leads to demonic paranormal experiences. God's word also teaches us that the gods of the nations are idols (Psalm 96:5) and that all idol gods are in reality evil spirits called devils. Paul wrote, "What say I then? that the idol is anything, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is anything? But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils and not to God. And I would not that ye have fellowship with devils" (I Corinthians 10:19-20).
Paul warns against having anything to do with things that would bring you into fellowship with devils. He warned against the practice of witchcraft and he and the other God-inspired authors of the New Testament warned against the very same practices against which the prophets of old warned.
