How to Have a Personal Relationship With Jesus: Son of God
Obedience to Jesus Is the Key
The answer to how to have a relationship with Jesus is: live in obedience to him. But, how can we obey if we don't know what we're supposed to do or not do? One thing that Christ taught in plain language was how to receive salvation. He said, "...Repent...," and he said, "...Follow me..." (KJV, Mat. 4:17, 19).
No one who refuses to repent of his sins and follow the Lord should expect to experience how to have a relationship with Jesus. Following Christ does not mean that you will never commit sin again. It does mean, however, that you should not live daily life in sin. This is keeping first things first. We offer guidance in praying what's commonly known as the "sinner's prayer" for readers who are interested (see links below).
I've Repented and Received Christ, Now What?
Those who have prayed the "sinner's prayer" in full sincerity for the first time are sometimes referred to as "baby Christians." This is because there is much for them to learn and much growth to take place in your walk with God. Learning how to have a relationship with Jesus begins with realizing this truth:
The Lord wants a relationship with you. His word says, "Draw nigh (close) to God, and he will draw nigh to you" (James 4:8). This also shows that man has a part to do in building a relationship with God. All responsibility is not on the Lord. This truth is repeatedly seen throughout scripture of the Christian Bible from Genesis to Revelation.
Pray, Pray, Pray
The following should be implemented in the life of everyone seeking how to have a relationship with Jesus:
1. Pray every single day. Of course, you can pray more than once per day. We see this behavior in the saints of the Old and New Testaments who obviously understood how to have a relationship with Jesus. Be obedient to the Lord's instructions for prayer. Remember, the followers of Jesus asked him how they should pray. He responded with what is popularly known as the Our Father prayer. One version of this prayer is found in Matthew 6:9-13. We highly recommend study of any of our teaching articles on prayer. They include:

Seek the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Sadly, far too few new believers in Christ are being encouraged to seek the baptism of the Holy Ghost. This is directly encouraged by biblical scripture! It is also an extremely important part of learning how to have a relationship with Jesus. Please read the following Christian article on this very important subject:
Baptism of the Holy Spirit: Is Speaking in Tongues Christian?
Get Understanding of the Word of God
We read, "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting, get understanding" (Prov. 4:7). Unfortunately, many Christians who regularly attend church never gain any "deep" understanding of the things of God. Consequently, they are often ineffective in ministry, and struggle with the question of how to have a relationship with Jesus.
We strongly believe in the King James Bible for many solid reasons. One of the most popular reasons for rejecting it has to do with understanding the scriptures. Don't forget that there's more confusion than ever nowadays with so many "better" translations of the word of God. Great men of God such as bishop Mason and Smith Wigglesworth read the King James Bible and were used mightily by the Lord. They won lost souls and performed signs and wonders in the name of Jesus.
Heavenly Manna offers a very wide variety of Christian articles and studies to help you in building a relationship with God. You can ask questions and make comments on all of our material; and receive a personal reply from us or other readers.
Finally, experiencing how to have a relationship with Jesus requires some patience and faith. Know that the Lord is paying attention to you. When you live in obedience to him, he also listens when you talk to him in prayer. Resist the thoughts of the enemy who comes to tell you that you're just wasting your time. Remember, the Lord loves obedience. When you learn his word and pray and witness Christ to others, the whole purpose is to live in obedience to Jesus who rewards you with a personal, loving relationship with himself.
One last thing to remember is the need to worship God. Sing praises to him, honor him in your everyday speech, meditate on his word, and ask him to protect and guard you from the deception of the enemy.
