What Does the Bible Say About Speaking in Tongues?
What exactly does the Bible say about speaking in tongues? Until we know for ourselves what the scriptures say on the topic, we remain in confusion, and possibly in error, depending on what teachings we've rejected or embraced. May the Lord speak to your spirit as you read, if you genuinely want to be able to answer: What does the Bible say about speaking in tongues. This is the only way to know if the teachings you are hearing about the topic are in agreement or conflict with the word of God.
Is Speaking in Tongues Real Christianity?
Many believers teach against belief and acceptance in speaking in tongues for various reasons. Among those reasons is the notion that this phenomenon was only for the day of Pentecost. These same people, however, believe that the New Testament is the covenant under which Christians live. They also believe that the apostle Paul was a real Christian. Paul, whose name was Saul, during his years of persecution of Christians, was NOT a believer on the day of Pentecost. His conversion to Christ is recorded in the book of Acts AFTER the day of Pentecost (9th chapter of Acts). Why then did he himself speak in tongues? And, why did he give instructions regarding speaking in tongues to the churches he planted AFTER the day of Pentecost?
Paul said, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels..." (KJV, 1 Cor. 13:1). Paul also said to the Christians in Corinth, "I would (want) that ye all spake with tongues..." (1 Cor. 14:5). Finally, Paul even warned, "...Forbid NOT to speak with tongues" (1 Cor. 14:39). This statement of Paul, who was filled with the Spirit of Christ, should be taken very seriously. We have begun to answer the question: What does the Bible say about speaking in tongues?
The words of Jesus are, "And these signs shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils; They shall speak with new tongues" (Mark 16:17). Why would we do only part of what Jesus says? We are to cast out devils, yet we are not to speak with tongues? Perhaps rejection of speaking in tongues is why we are not seeing the casting out of devils either. We don't pick and choose which things of God we will receive and which things we will reject.
Holy Ghost Speaking in Tongues and Unholy Ghost Tongues
We continue preparation to answer the question: What does the Bible say about speaking in tongues? Some forbid this gift of God, teaching that it is dangerous, because unholy spirits can mimic the acts of God, including tongues. In the scripture of Luke 11:11-13, Jesus plainly taught, "If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?"
It is plain and simple. If we ask our heavenly Father for the Holy Ghost, he is not going to give us an unholy ghost.
Tongues: A Sign of Fanaticism?
What does the Bible say about speaking in tongues when we are warned that it is nothing but a sign of fanaticism? We read, "And these SIGNS shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues" (Mark 16:17). Jesus said tongues are a sign of following him. Why should man say that it is a sign of fanaticism?
Tongues and Self Glory
Reasons given to forbid tongues include the accusation that people are only magnifying themselves, not God, when they speak in tongues. The scripture of Acts 10:46 says, "For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God...."
What Does the Bible Say About Speaking in Tongues and Shame?
Some people have revealed that speaking in tongues is an embarrassment. But, Jesus has revealed something as well when he said, "For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed..." (Luke 9:26).
A Foreign Language or an Angelic One?
What does the Bible say about speaking in tongues when considering foreign languages of Earth and a heavenly language? Some teach that tongues should never be "gibberish," rather they should be actual languages spoken by man, such as French, Russian, or Hebrew. How then do we explain the apostle Paul saying, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of ANGELS..." (1 Cor. 13:1)?
"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh NOT unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries" (1 Cor. 14:2). Tongues can be for the speaking of foreign languages as we've seen in the book of the Acts; and they can be for the speaking of mysteries in an unknown language. This is not according to theory. This is according to scripture from the Christian Bible.
What Does the Bible Say About Speaking in Tongues Confusion?
Some argue against acceptance of the manifestation of tongues, saying that it only leads to confusion and that God is not the author of confusion (1 Cor. 14:33). Again, how does the word of God answer our concerns? We read, "Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret" (1 Cor. 14:13). Why would you pray for interpretation? Because interpretation is understanding. Where there is understanding, confusion is absent.
"...I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the UNDERSTANDING also" (1 Cor. 14:15).
What does the Bible say about speaking in tongues? It says all of these things; and God's word is the last word.
