What Is the Sinner's Prayer?
Purpose of the Sinner's Prayer
The term, "the sinner's prayer" is not found in the scriptures of the word of God. It's simply a term that is commonly used to refer to the prayer that a person has made up his or her mind to receive Jesus as personal Lord and Savior. Usually, such an individual has already come to understand that everyone is born a sinner and is in need of the Savior (Romans 3:23). Most people who have made a conscious decision to receive Christ as Lord know that they need his forgiveness. They already know that they need him to come into their life to guide them in the natural and in the spiritual that, when they leave this world, they will go to spend eternity with the Lord.
The sinner's prayer, in summary, is a way of making confession of sin, asking God's forgiveness and cleansing, and accepting his Son, Jesus into your life. Scripture teaches, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (KJV, 1 John 1:9). The word of God also says, "...If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is make unto salvation" (Romans 10:9-10).
How to Pray the Sinner's Prayer
So, what do you say to God when you are ready to pray the sinner's prayer? Can you say this prayer alone or should another Christian be present? These are common questions that most people have who are responding to the call of God to be saved for the very first time. It's almost always nice if another truly Christian believer is with you to encourage and support your decision to accept Jesus as Savior. Nevertheless, anyone who hasn't committed
the unpardonable sin of
blasphemy against the Holy Ghost can approach God him or herself without the aid of someone else. Sometimes there is no one at the time you want and need to say the sinner's prayer, which should never be postponed simply because you would have to say it alone.
You can certainly follow a pre-printed version of the sinner's prayer often found in Bibles. However, I would strongly recommend that you use your own words. If you're like the average person, you will feel very awkward, but everyday that you talk to God you will become more comfortable with praying. Whenever it's physically possible to kneel and bow your head, do so, because this is a part of showing reverence to God. The basics parts of the sinner's prayer are as follows:
1. Confess to God the FATHER that you are a sinner in need of his forgiveness and that you believe Jesus is his Son whom he raised from the dead to eternal life and is now seated at his right hand.
2. Ask God the FATHER to forgive you for your sin and to cleanse you from unrighteousness in Jesus' name as the scripture of 1 John 1:9 instructs. Remember that his word (the Christian Bible) is his instruction to you in righteousness, including how to begin your walk with Jesus (2 Timothy 3:16). You are asking forgiveness and to be cleansed IN JESUS' NAME because Jesus is the only way to the Father (St. John 15:6), and it is only through him that you can be forgiven and cleansed. This is why he died on the cross at Calvary and this is why he is called our advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1-2). Praying to God the Father is not a slight of God the Son (Jesus). When the apostles asked their Lord Jesus to teach them how to pray, Jesus responded, "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our FATHER..." (Matthew 6:9).
3. Tell God that you accept his Son Jesus as your Savior and Lord. This is a direct invitation to Christ to come to live in you to keep you saved. God responds immediately to this prayer because your repentance and acceptance of his Son as your Lord is his perfect will (2 Peter 3:9).
4. Don't forget to give thanks and praise to God for saving you. "In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (I Thessalonians 5:18).
5. Ask God to teach you his word so you can live in obedience to him, and ask him to warn and disturb you at any time you are about to be deceived into accepting beliefs and doctrines that appear Christian, but are not (Ephesians 4:14-15). Trust that God will surely answer this prayer. He will continually answer it if you will continually heed his warnings. The word of God says, "Draw nigh (close) to God and he will draw nigh to you..." (James 4:8). Forming a relationship with God is not one-sided.
6. Believe that you are saved. You must exercise the measure of faith God gave to you to begin your walk with him. It took faith to even say the sinner's prayer. That faith was given by God to enable you to do what is his will for you to do. "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is (there), and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrews 11:6).
When to Say the Sinner's Prayer
The sinner's prayer should be said AS SOON AS you hear God's voice to accept his Son, Jesus; it's very dangerous to put it off. There's no guarantee that you will live to accept Christ at a later time. There's no knowing what the enemy has in store for you that he will be able to carry out if you are not under the protection of the Lord. The word of God warns, "Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, TODAY if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts..." (Hebrews 3:7-8).
Rejoice in your salvation. God's angels rejoice over every sinner who comes to repentance and receives
Jesus as Savior (Luke 15:10).
