Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world
When someone receives forgiveness for his sins having confessed them and accepted Christ as Savior for the first time in his life, he's a "baby" Christian. The same may be said of someone who's returning to God from a relationship with Him that was never truly rooted from the beginning. Two things baby Christians should be continuously encouraged to do is pray daily and learn God's word. Sadly, few new believers will succeed at the latter. They tend to look to church leaders, ministers, and Bible teachers for understanding of the scriptures while ignoring their responsibility to "sit at the feet" of Jesus for themselves. Although baby Christians should receive help, they should also be encouraged with the words, "Teach yourself the Bible." The apostle Paul, after he first believed, did not look to any man to teach him (Gal. 1:16 KJV).
King David prayed to God saying, "Shew (show) me thy ways, O Lord, teach me thy paths" (Psalm 25:4). The Lord told His disciples in the scripture of St. John 14:26, "But, the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things."
These scriptures, by no means, are to be viewed as suggestions or commandments to baby Christians to turn a deaf ear to teachers of the gospel. God Himself specifically called some of His servants to be teachers of His word. The scripture of 1 Corinthians 12:28 is only one of many biblical passages that confirm this by reminding that, "...God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers...." If God set teachers in His church, why then does His word also read, "...Ye need not that any many teach you; but, as the same anointing teacheth you of all things and is truth, and is no lie and even as it hath taught you ye shall abide in Him" (1 John 2:227)?
It should be remembered that the scripture says that the believer does not need a man to teach him God's word. This doesn't mean that God doesn't use men and women to teach the Bible. On the contrary, He does. Nevertheless, no one who hungers and thirsts after righteousness will go without understanding of God's word whether he has access to a teacher or not. The Spirit of God Himself will teach him when no one else can or will. Also, just as God has set teachers in the church, so Satan has infiltrated the church through false teachers. The apostle Peter warned, "But there were false prophets also among the people even as there shall be false teachers among you who privily shall bring in damnable heresies even denying the Lord that bought them and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of (2 Peter 2:1-2).
As a baby Christian, teach yourself the Bible. This helps to guard you against heresies and to enhance your spiritual growth in Christ. God's word declares, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God that giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him. But, let him ask in faith, nothing wavering...." (James 1:5-6).
Wisdom from heaven and your faith in God is worth more than the greatest treasure on Earth, and must be desired and treated as such. Understanding doesn't always come easily or swiftly, but it will come. If you were looking for a treasure that you knew existed somewhere in your area, you'd search and search and then search some more. You would give up the material goods you had to buy the land on which the treasure was found to ensure it remains in your possession. At least this is the mind-set to have when seeking wisdom from God which will always point to Jesus.
"The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found he hideth and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man seeking goodly pearls who, when he had found one pearl of great price went and sold all that he had and bought it" (Mat. 13:44-46).
