Causes of Low Self Esteem Revealed in the Christian Bible?
The Power of Words
Causes of low self esteem and insecurity often are related to the negative words and actions of other people; and frequently begins in childhood. However, self esteem can be lowered at any age.
Proverbs 18:21 says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue...." Such power, depending on the situation, can cause spiritual and/or literal physical death. When a judge pronounces a death sentence, the condemned to die, will suffer literal, physical death unless the Lord intervenes to stop it.
Blasphemy, the unpardonable sin, is committed with the tongue (Matthew 12:32) and is spiritual death. Jesus, who is eternal life, is received by confession with the tongue (Romans 10:9). Hope can be brought back to life by words pronounced with the tongue, and self esteem can be killed by the tongue. All of this amounts to life and death being in the tongue. It is no wonder that the wrong words figure high on the list of the causes of low self esteem.
Scriptures of the Christian Bible continue to emphasize the
power of words when they teach us that blessing and curses lie in the tongue (James 4:8-10). The Lord warns that man will give account in the day of judgment even of the idle words that he speaks (Matthew 12:36). He goes on to say, "For by thy words thou shalt be justified and by thy words thou shalt be condemned (Matthew 12:37).
Actions as Causes of Low Self Esteem
Again, actions, not just negative words, also are among the causes of low self esteem and insecurity. God's word deals with the fact that man often assigns value and worth to someone based on physical beauty, and social and economic status. This is why a good number of people who have low self esteem are the ones who are physically unattractive in the majority opinion. They also tend to be in what man considers a lowly status in society. The words and actions of true Christians, however, should not figure among the usual causes of low self esteem and insecurity. We are told, "For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; and ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool; are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?" (James 2:2-4).
Causes of low self esteem related to social status when not considering how much money a person has are seen in the way orphans, widows, the disabled, etc. are usually considered second class citizens. Part of the definition of
true religion, according to the Christian Bible, is to, "...Visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction..." (James 1:27). Again, genuine followers of Christ do not take part in the primary causes of low self esteem.
Sadly, the vanity of judging someone's worth based on physical appearance is prevalent in almost all societies. However, it is prevalent even among Christians, though the author and finisher of the Christian faith,
Christ himself, was not physically attractive. We read, "...He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him" (Isaiah 53:2).
Yes, the word of God reveals that, in the world, the amount of money someone has, social status, and physical beauty figure among the diverse causes of low self esteem. The Bible also reveals the signs of low self esteem, God's way of avoiding this problem, and
how to overcome low self esteem with his word.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
