Most people who've had any exposure to the Christian religion know that the Lord Jesus did many works to help people while he was on Earth. In fact, he did so many that if every one of them was recorded in books, the world couldn't contain them all (St. John 21:25). One would think then that the definition of pure religion must be the doing of good works to others. Jesus fed the hungry, healed the sick, enlightened those who were in spiritual darkness, and gave hope to the hopeless. Since he's the author of the Christian religion, Christianity must call for doing the works that he did. The Savior taught, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father (KJV, St. John 14:12).
While it is true that the practice of true religion in Christians should involve the display of God's love, such displays are, by no means, a substitute for salvation. Regardless of personal opinion or dictionary definitions, true religion, according to God's word, calls for more than the giving of alms to the poor. Is such a declaration in agreement with scripture? Yes, it is. Some people are swift to quote a scripture in the New Testament book of James that says that true religion is to help the widow and orphan. Although this is indeed what the passage says, this is not all of what it says. The scripture to which they refer reads, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world" (James 1:27).
The last part of keeping oneself unspotted from the world is usually left out--or unknown. It is, nevertheless, just as much a part of the biblical definition of pure religion as the part about giving aid to the fatherless and widow in their affliction. What does it mean to keep oneself unspotted from the world? First, it's necessary to know what "world" refers to in order to avoid being spotted by it. While the word has more than one meaning in scripture, including the literal referral to planet Earth, it's also used symbolically to speak of people who don't live according to God's law. It often denotes darkness, inability, usually by choice, to see God and not knowing him. Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 5:14, "Ye are the light of the world." He also said, "Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him..." (St. John 17). Those who say they know Christ, yet never behave any differently from those who claim no relationship with him, understandably, are considered part of the "world."
