How to Overcome Low Self Esteem
There are four basic steps for self esteem self help that is available in the scriptures of the Christian Bible. They are:
1. If you have low self esteem, admit it, even if only to yourself in the beginning.
2. Realize that self esteem self help requires accepting and feeding on the thoughts that God would have you to embrace.
3. Resist the defeating thoughts that the enemy will attempt to place and keep in your mind to interfere with your self esteem self help.
4. Get your priorities in life straight.
Admit the Problem of Low Self Esteem
No problem is solved without first admitting that it exists. Constant need for attention, a hunger and thirst for recognition from others, a hunger for some form of power, and a hunger for inclusion in the in-crowd are typical signs of someone with low self esteem. They are the signs that have been known and read long before there was ever such a discipline as psychology.
The Power of Thoughts for Self Esteem Self Help
Although a person is a new creature in Christ the moment he comes to repentance and accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior, he still has a mind that has to be renewed. A newborn is a new creature, but it takes time for him to grow up and learn the things he must learn. He is fed milk until he can take meat. The new Christian believer is a baby in Christ and is fed milk to start his spiritual nourishment. We read, "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby" (KJV, 1 Peter 2:2).
Self esteem self help God's way lies in the renewing of your mind through his word to transform you into a creature that does not suffer from low self esteem. It is not the will of God for his people to suffer from low self-esteem. We read, "...Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable, and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2). Where in the scriptures do you begin to get self esteem self help?
You can start by learning the importance that God assigns to your life. We read that there is joy in heaven over one sinner who comes to repentance. If you've truly repented of your sins and have given your life to Jesus for him to be your Lord, heaven rejoices. Most of the world couldn't care less about your repentance, but if the world's opinion is more important to you than God's, you might remain trapped in low self esteem because you simply might not ever measure up to what the world esteems.
Study the Bible, God's word, to learn the position that truly obedient servants of Christ are graciously given by God who even has the power to exalt whom he desires in this present world. God's word says, "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time" (1 Peter 5:6). The position of the obedient servant of God is one of child, king, priest, and future bride.
A preacher once taught on the strong mind of king David, who for a period of time had to be on the run in fear of king Solomon. This was even after he had been anointed king over Israel. Why would God's anointed as king have to run like a fugitive? Nevertheless, David kept in mind that he was not what man could have said he was--a fugitive. He was what God said he was--a king. And in due time, he took the throne.
Resist Thoughts from the Enemy
Christian self esteem self help requires obedience to the biblical instructions of James 4:7 which says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." This doesn't mean that he won't return, but he will have to flee when he is resisted in the power of Jesus.
Getting Priorities Straight
We all have a choice to make. Will we seek to please man or God (Galatians 1:10)? The Christian Bible repeatedly reminds that the things that are important to the world are not always the same things that are important to God. It reminds that the things that the world holds in high esteem are seldom the things that God holds in high esteem. Many of the things and people that the world rejects are received by God; and God rejects many of the things that the world receives.
We read, "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. And God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. And base (lowly) things of the world, and things which are despised hath God chosen. Yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are" (1 Corinthians 2:28).
Christian self esteem self help requires making what God thinks priority over what man thinks. To do the opposite is not only vanity, it is sometimes the very reason why many people suffer from low self esteem in the first place.
