Anti-Semitism: Are Hostile Attitudes Against the State of Israel Justified?
Unfortunately, anti-semitism against the state of Israel is alive and well and steadily being instilled into young children to assure continued opposition against the nation. While it's true that ignorance can be a strong medium in which hatred is bred, some attitudes cannot be blamed on it especially when they persist even after the ignorance has been removed.
Some years back I worked for a company employing hundreds of people who worked very closely together as we weren't even separated by panels. Needless to say, when we weren't assisting customers, we were chatter boxes and a host of topics would be discussed daily in various "clicks" that were formed. I met an older gentleman with whom I had brief and sporadic, but interesting conversations although we had practically nothing in common except employer.
Anti-Semitism and Ignorance of the History of the State of Israel
He was a war veteran who understandably was outspoken on politics. I valued his opinion and had much respect for the accomplishments he had made in life and his heroism as a young soldier whose life was put at risk to retain the coveted freedoms we enjoy in the United States. There was much I could learn from him, but little I could offer in return. However, one day he expressed his disgust over this country's support of the state of Israel, an opinion that I believed would have been different had he taken into consideration certain facts. His opinions were clearly based on anti-semitism. Anyway, these were facts that had been shared with me and of which he wasn't aware despite his knowledge of American government and politics. I shared with him what I had learned, and his views steeped in anti-semitism and hostility against the state of Israel were abandoned. These facts are easily verified, but rarely mentioned. I've chosen only some of them which I've summarized in my own words.
The state of Israel was a nation as early as 1312 B.C.E. This means it existed two thousand years before Islam arose. Why should there be Islamic nations but no Jewish nation? The only ones I see offering a response to such a question hold views born from anti-semitism. Since the conquest by the Jews in 1272 B.C.E, they've controlled the land for a thousand years and have been present in it for more than three thousand years. How then can the state of Israel be considered a foreign or invading presence in their own home? Why did Arab refugees in the land not begin to identify themselves as a Palestinian people until 1967, approximately twenty years after the formation of the modern state of Israel?
I read an article today on the BBC stating that the European Economic Community supports dividing Jerusalem into East and West with East Jerusalem being the capital of a Palestinian state. Jews pray facing Jerusalem, Muslims pray with their backs towards the city. Is there really a desire to make the eastern part of Jerusalem the capital of a future Palestinian state or simply a desire to cause distress to the state of Israel? Under Israeli rulership, Muslims, Christians, and people of other faiths are allowed access to sites of importance to their religious beliefs. When Jordan ruled, holy sites of importance to Jews were desecrated. It's recorded that around fifty-eight synagogues were destroyed during this time yet the United Nations remained silent. Are the policies of the United States even steeped in anti-semitism?
The state of Israel is a tiny little nation surrounded by twenty-one Arab countries many of which are off limits to Jews, but Arabs are allowed residence in Israel. Obviously, they enjoy great freedom considering the fact that many Arabs have been democratically elected to the Knesset (Israel's parliament). How many Jews have been allowed residence in Arab states much less a seat in parliament?
This is only a very tiny portion of what my research turned up on the topic of the state of Israel, anti-semitism, the rich history of Jerusalem and so much more that wasn't even discussed during my studies in college of American National Government. Most people are aware that the problem of anti-semitism is not really a political one; it's a
spiritual dealt with by scripture in the Old and New Testaments of the
Christian Bible. However, even when discussing strictly from a political point of view, there's something very wrong with having such animosity against an individual, a group of people, or an entire nation that has a God-given right to exist like anyone else.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
