Calvina, the young battered wife of Duane, is in desperate need of a new start in life. Will her jealous husband, the mad man with whom she had been unequally yoked, prove too much to ever hope for a chance of staying together--a chance to fix her troubled marriage?
We encourage you to read the two main character profiles before reading the first chapter. We can be so wrong in the strong initial opinions we form of people, which we see in The Beauty Of Staying Together (originally published under the title: Detour), a story based on true events. A well-known talk show host once conducted a show to which he invited members of the Aryan Youth Group/Movement as guests to discuss their purpose for formation. During the course of the heated discussion, as their beliefs were espoused, the movement's representatives repeatedly declared their hatred of certain groups of people, among which were the Jews.
Someone in the audience attempted to silence the group's members by reminding them that Jesus was a Jew. The speaker received overwhelming support from the audience who applauded and cheered at this statement. The speaker hoped, in all sincerity, to bring God's word into the argument to enlighten those in attendance; however, his Bible knowledge was much too deficient and his efforts failed miserably. The Aryan Youth Movement representatives stated that they believe that the "real" Jews, God's people, are actually Aryans. One of the group members shouted in authority to the audience, with a fist in the air, that, "nowhere in the Bible does it say that Jesus was a Jew." Sadly, there wasn't a single soul in the audience that had enough Bible knowledge to know that this statement was false and who could refute it with biblical authority.
The United States of America has a constitution based on many truths taken directly from the Holy Bible. Bibles are freely sold in bookstores, available in libraries, accessible on the Internet, and given away free of charge by churches and ministries. Nevertheless, an American audience that desired to stand on the Good Book's teachings was quickly and easily put to shame on national television by their lack of Bible knowledge.
The scripture below is just one of many that plainly tells the reader that Jesus was a Jew. It's not difficult to understand. It's not prophetic. It doesn't speak in symbols. It's not shrouded in mystery. It's plain English. The only problem is that it has not been read. It says, "There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans" (KJV, John 4:7, 9).
In many nations of the world, people literally risk their lives to obtain and read a Bible. While this goes on, too many Bibles in the United States collect dust as America seeks out everything but the treasure that's in her own "back yard."
The audience of the talk show is an example of just how shamefully deficient the Bible knowledge of most people is.
