The Christian Bible on Binding and Loosing - Part II

The Keys of the Kingdom Given to Peter
If Christ is truly speaking to all of his followers in Matthew 18:15-20, why does he speak of giving the keys to the kingdom of heaven specifically to Peter in Matthew 16:18-19? Remember, the keys to the kingdom of heaven are not only for binding, they are also for loosing. Do we remember what was loosed in the fifteenth chapter of the book of Acts and the role that Peter played in that great event?
The day of Pentecost was the day when the followers of Christ were gathered together to receive the Holy Ghost--power from on high to be witnesses to the uttermost parts of the earth (Acts 1:8, 2:1-4). Later we see how God used Peter to preach the gospel of Jesus to a group of gentiles consisting of a centurion of the Italian military, his family and friends. Peter witnessed the salvation and the filling of these people with the same Holy Spirit of God who dwelled in him and in the others who were present on the day of Pentecost (Acts 10:1-35).
Now that the kingdom of heaven made no more distinction between Jew and Gentile, there was a discussion among the Jews concerning which rituals and traditions should be kept by their new brethren. Therefore, they decided to come together to discuss the matter. Remember, this coming together was a gathering of believers; therefore, Jesus, the great Witness, was present among them. Every word that was established or bound on earth, was also bound in heaven because of the heavenly presence of the witness of Christ.
We read, "And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by MY mouth should hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; and put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?" (Acts 15:1, 6-10).
Later in the same chapter (15) of Acts we see the decision to write letters to the Gentiles informing them that they were not to be burdened or bound by the traditions of the Jews and the rituals of the Old Covenant. It was now agreed among the witnesses, which included the presence of the witness of Christ, that such binding things were to be dropped from being related to salvation. Those things, under the New Covenant had been loosed on earth. They were now loosed in heaven also.
We read, "Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren. And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia. Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law, to whom we gave no such commandment. It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul. For it seemed good to the
Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;" (Acts 15:22-25, 28). Those necessary things are then enumerated in the verse that follows (verse 29).
In the mouth of several witnesses among whom was Christ, the word to the Gentiles regarding the necessary things for salvation was established. It was bound on earth and bound in heaven. The things that not even the
Jews could keep were loosed on earth from being tied to their
salvation; and they were loosed on
earth.
Binding and loosing in the Christian Bible has been used to attempt to support the establishment of laws within some churches by men who were never moved by the Holy Ghost. Teachings and doctrines that are not in agreement with scripture of the Christian Bible can be bound on earth by men, but they are not bound in heaven. They can be loosed on earth by men, but they are not loosed in heaven, because the witness of Christ is not among "brethren" who do not hold the doctrine of
Christ in the first place. Righteous binding and loosing is inspired and governed by the
Holy Ghost and will never disagree with word of God.
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
