We encourage you to read the two main character profiles before reading the first chapter. We can be so wrong in the strong initial opinions we form of people, which we see in
The Beauty Of Staying Together (originally published under the title: Detour), a story based on true events.

St. John 3:16: The Real Meaning of Salvation, Everlasting Life and Belief in Jesus

The Promise of St John 3:16
One of the most famous scriptures in the Christian world is, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (KJV, St John 3:16). Many people believe and would like to believe that "believeth in him" refers only to possessing an intellectual belief in the existence of the only begotten Son of God, Jesus. The belief held that, basically, we can live any way we choose and still spend eternity in the kingdom of heaven if we just believe that Jesus lives, stems from applying a natural definition to a spiritual message.
True Belief in Jesus Is Obedience to Him
Everlasting life (in the hearafter) is salvation and salvation is belief in Jesus according to St. John 3:16. But, what is belief in Jesus? The definition of belief in Jesus or faith in God is obedience to the Lord. The scripture of Romans 10:16 says, "But they have not all OBEYED the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord who hath believed BELIEVED our report?" Notice how the prophet made "obeyed" and "believed" inseparable. It's not difficult to see that he is clearly saying that had they (the people) believed, they would also have obeyed. As soon as Adam and Eve were convinced by the serpent that they would not die if they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (they stopped believing God), they disobeyed the Lord and ate. Belief in Jesus compels obedience to him. Obedience to him translates into salvation and eternal life according to St. John 3:16.
The scripture of 1 Peter 4:17 reads, "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that OBEY not the gospel of God?" Again, emphasis is on obedience. Those whose belief in Jesus is real also are obedient to him.
Belief in Jesus Is Faith in God
Genuine faith in God can be somewhat compared to faith in anything. For example, if a person is thirsty and believes that water will quench that thirst, he or she will get up and take whatever action is needed to carry out that faith in the thirst-quenching power of water. This might require turning on the faucet, pouring water from a pitcher, drinking from a water fountain or a natural spring.
If the thirsty individual, however, has no faith in water to quench thirst, he or she will see no need to take action or obey a non-existent belief. This is why James 2:17 reminds, "Even so faith, if it hath not works is dead being alone." Belief in
Jesus without works (acts of obedience) is also dead being alone. To be dead is the opposite of having
