What Are the Health Benefits of Raw Honey?
The Word of God on the Consumption of Honey
Joyce Rogers, author of, The Bible's Seven Secrets To Healthy Eating, asks the question, "Did you know that there is actually an admonition in the Bible to eat honey?" The scripture of Proverbs 24:13 says, "My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste." It does not require a knowledge of science or certification in the study of nutrition to understand that there are health benefits of raw honey. Of course the honey to which the Christian Bible refers is raw. It has not been pasteurized, artificially made, or made by bees that fed on flowers poisoned by pesticides, herbicides and a number of other carcinogens (cancer-causing agents).
Among the specific health benefits of raw honey are: a natural source of vitamins, a natural source of minerals, and natural enzymes. The vitamin and mineral content of honey varies. The darker the honey, the richer it tends to be in minerals such as iron. Dark honeys include buckwheat and heather. The B vitamins, vitamin K, vitamin C, and even carotene is found in all natural honey. It's interesting to note that the presence of vitamin K can be considered one of the health benefits of raw honey in terms of dental health. Vitamin K has been shown to help halt the formation of oral bacteria, resulting in the inhibition of tooth decay.
Sadly, many people are unaware of the importance of natural enzymes for the break down of foods to receive proper nutrition. Amylase, glucose oxidase, catalase, invertase, and acid phosphatase are among the all natural enzymes that occur in raw honey. Remember, the health benefits of raw honey cannot be compared to any benefits of honey that has been heated (pasteurized). Pasteurization destroys enzymes and a good portion of vitamin C. Refined white sugar (sucrose), is not only void of enzymes it also has been robbed of nutrients that the Lord intended for man to consume. Tampering with God's foods has consequences--sickness, disease, and a premature death. This is not the will of God for his people. We read, "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in HEALTH, even as thy soul prospereth" (III John 2). It is good to realize that when we trust the teachings and counsel of the word of God, we show honor to the Lord. Showing him honor is not a substitute for salvation. However, it is good to honor God in everyday life.
The Health Benefits of Raw Honey With Flavor
Another amazing fact about honey is that there are more than 300 different flowers from which bees give us honey. Each floral source produces a different flavor!Try various honeys until you find the ones that suit your preferences. Keep in mind, however, that even honey should be eaten in moderation. Again, the word of God teaches, "Hast thou found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it" (Proverbs 25:16).
Also remember that the health benefits of raw honey do not apply to infants under the age of one. Infant botulism, though rare, can be brought on by feeding honey to children who are not yet at least one year old.
