Christianity and Wicca: Can They Mix?
A comparison of Christianity and Wicca, like almost anything else, is best made by considering Wicca philosophy and the philosophy (doctrine) of Christ. Despite the misconceptions about Christianity and Wicca, there are authorities on both religions. Ms. Thea Sabin, author of Wicca: Philosophy And Practice of Luminous Magic, is our chosen authority on Wicca Philosophy. The scriptures of the King James Bible are our chosen authority on the doctrine of Jesus Christ, the Author of the Christian faith.
Elements of Wicca Philosophy
The following are beliefs held by practitioners of Wicca:
1. Satan (the Devil, Lucifer) does not exist.
2. The path of Wicca is based on Earth, not on heaven. Followers don't concentrate on the hereafter. They focus on life on Earth.
3. Wicca is an experimental religion. There is no Wicca Bible. Personal life experience is what becomes truth.
4. True belief in Wicca philosophy requires belief in gods and goddesses.
5. Meditation and the development of psychic abilities allow for discovery of the divine and of the cosmos.
Christianity and Wicca: A Comparison
Followers of the Wicca religion do not believe in a devil. However, the Old and New Testaments affirm the existence of Satan, also known as the Devil, the Adversary, Lucifer, Beelzebub, the Serpent, etc. The Lord Jesus repeatedly spoke of the existence of Satan (Mat. 4:1-5, 13:39, 25:41, St. John 8:44, and so many more.) Christianity and Wicca teach two different things about the existence of Satan.
Life After Death
Wicca philosophy focuses on centering attention on life on Earth, not on a hereafter. But, Jesus taught, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But, lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven..." (KJV, Mat. 6:19-20). This scripture does not speak against earning money. It does, however, clearly show the Lord encouraging concern about life after death.
In fact, Christ even issued a warning concerning the afterlife. He warned, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. But, rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Mat. 10:8). Of course it is natural to fear someone who is threatening and able to kill the body. What the Lord is emphasizing is the need to have a greater fear: one of him who will deal with everyone in an afterlife. Again, Christianity and Wicca are in disagreement. It is the living God who spoke these warnings. Therefore, Wicca philosophy is in direct conflict with the word of God.
Biblical Truth and Wiccan Truth
Followers of Wicca consider truth to be what has been experienced personally. But, the Christian Bible declares that the word of God is truth (St. John 17:17). It declares that God's truth is truth regardless of whether man believes or experiences it. This is why it is written, "For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar..." (Rom. 3:3-4). Christianity and Wicca philosophy are in sharp disagreement.
True Identity of Idols
Believers in Wicca believe in gods and goddesses, and give them honor. The scripture of Isaiah 45:5 reads, "I am the Lord, and there is none else. There is no God beside me...." In the Christian Bible, all gods and goddesses are identified as idols. Idols are identified as devils. The apostle Paul wrote, "What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But I say that the things which the Gentiles (Pagans) sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God..." (1 Cor. 10:20). Paul goes on to say that to sacrifice to devils is to have fellowship with them, and that no one can have fellowship with God and with devils. This is one of the most important scriptures that reveal the total disagreement between Christianity and Wicca.
The Conclusion
Last, but not least, meditation and the willful development of psychic abilities are strongly encouraged in Wicca philosophy. This conflicts with the doctrine of Christ. A person will choose whether they want to follow Wicca philosophy or Christ. However, whether speaking of natural or supernatural things, it is always wise to get understanding to make an informed decision. Learning even a few of the sharp and serious differences between Christianity and Wicca is one way of making an informed decision.
