Christianity Today: How Many Different Types of Christianity Are There?
Christianity today, in the minds of many people, is whatever set of beliefs or doctrines each individual wants it to be. Such a mindset was born from the idea that man is not subject to the law of Christ put forth in God's word, but rather that God's word is subject to man's private (individual) interpretation. However, how does the Bible itself answer the question, "How many different types of Christianity are there?" What does it say about the interpretation of its teachings?
Christianity Today Governed by the Law of Christ
Many spiritual matters can be best understood by comparing them to natural laws which is part of the reason why Jesus of Nazareth made use of parables when teachings his disciples. God established natural and supernatural laws just like man establishes laws of the land better known as "government." There is not a government in existence or that has ever existed that was able to maintain order by allowing each citizen to interpret the law according to likes, dislikes, and personal opinion. This is nothing short of individuals being a law unto themselves which amounts to anarchy, or as the Bible would put it, establishing one's own righteousness. Also, there's room for only one national government in a nation; attempting to change this can easily lead to civil war.
These basic and time-tested concepts seem to have been forgotten when speaking of Christianity today which is why the question, "How many different types of Christianity are there?" is even being asked in the first place. Again, what has the Bible already said on the question? When the apostle Paul wrote to the Christian church at Ephesus, he reminded them that, "There is one body and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all..." (KJV, Ephesian 4:5-6).
It can't be made any plainer that there is only one "form" of Christianity. Presentation of this biblical truth does not tackle any specific "interpretations" of God's word on any particular topic nor is that even the intention. The goal is simply to realize that the biblical answer to the question, "How many different types of Christianity are there?" is one. What the apostle Paul taught to the church of his day is the same message that has been left for Christianity today. If there is only one
body of Christ, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God, and one Father, it's no wonder that all who serve him were instructed to, "...Finally, be ye all of one mind" (I Peter 3:8). One mind on one accord does not speak opposite things and, "...God is not the author of confusion..." (I Corinthians 14:33). Finally, II Peter 1:20 says, "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation."
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
