What Do NREMT Test Results Really Prove?
Each year, thousands of emergency medical technician (EMT), advanced emergency medical technician (AEMT), and paramedic students must take and pass an exam. That exam is of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), whose purpose for testing is to prove the competency of American EMTs and paramedics. This means that NREMT test results should be a true reflection of what an EMT or paramedic knows at his or her level in the field of emergency medicine. But, do NREMT exam results really reveal what the student knows? No, they do not.
What NREMT Test Result Do Reveal
The only thing that NREMT exam results reveal is a partial truth regarding how well an EMT, AEMT, or paramedic student is able to test. They do not reveal how competent the EMT or paramedic is or would be at the job of saving lives in the real world. There are students who have good NREMT test results who, when an emergency occurs, are not competent at the task of saving a life. And then there are students who get such a poor score on their test that they fail it. Nevertheless, they are among some the most competent EMTs, AEMTs, and paramedics in the field.
NREMT Test Results and Reciprocity
Reciprocity refers to becoming licensed or certified in a state in which an EMT, AEMT, or paramedic did not initially train. Some have suggested that though holding NREMT certification poorly reflects the competency of an emergency medical services (EMS) provider, it does help when applying for reciprocity. That simply is not always true. While NREMT certification is almost always a requirement for reciprocity, it certainly does not guarantee that another state will grant a license or certification to an EMS provider from another state.
Why is this? Again, the "high ups" know that NREMT test results do not prove much. Therefore, the state licensed or certified EMT, AEMT, or paramedic might be required to undergo additional training to practice in more than one state. If NREMT test results do not prove that an EMS provider is competent, why are the exams necessary for initial licensure or certification? It's an additional reason to charge a fee ($100.00) to an EMT, AEMT, or paramedic student testing for the first time at his or her level of EMS.
To rely on something like NREMT exam results in the days when professions, including the medical one, were learned by apprenticeship would have been ridiculous. Of course we don't want to go back to the "dark ages." However, anyone who believes that good NREMT test results prove competency in an EMS provider is in the dark.
