From Basic to Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
Why Train for Advanced Emergency Medical Technician?
Some emergency medical technicians at the basic level, desire to be able to perform interventions at a more advanced level to give the best care to their patients. However, financial and family obligations sometimes get in the way of continuing on to the paramedic level. The option of taking advanced emergency medical technician training might be the answer to the desire to advance in the field of emergency medical services (EMS). During the past few years, there has been an emphasis on remembering the importance of basic life support (BLS). In fact, many people in health care, including medical doctors, believe that practicing paramedic skills in the field sometimes interferes with the much needed intervention of rapid transport of a critical patient to a medical facility.
Although there is a push for standardization of the EMS system throughout the United States, we are not yet there. However, the various levels of EMT have always been similar in all states. Always familiarize yourself with, and follow your local protocols.
EMT Advanced: What Is Different?
It might be somewhat confusing when the advanced emergency medical technician level is compared to the two intermediate levels that are being phased out. However, we'll look at EMT advanced skills in the state of Iowa. One of the most important of the skills acquired in advanced emergency medical technician training is peripheral intravenous therapy (IV). Patients suffering from blood loss, dehydration, cardiac arrest, and other serious medical problems, need IV therapy, an intervention outside of the basic level of EMT. Other interventions performed by the advanced emergency medical technician include tracheobronchial suctioning, and the administration of a wider range of drugs such as inhaled beta agonist, nitrous oxide to help relieve pain, and nitroglycerin for chest pain.
Some EMTs find it helpful to get experience at the basic level before going on to advanced emergency medical technician or to paramedic. Others believe that, if paramedic is ultimately the level at which you want to work, you should not stop off at the advanced level, or "waste" time getting experience as a basic. Each person is different and his or her circumstances are different, which often dictate the choices made.
