What Is the Meaning of the Rosary?
A Look at the Meaning of the Rosary Beads
Those who believe in the rosary tend to explain that it is the most pious form of prayer, consisting in part of the pronouncement of the repeated words, "hail Mary" and "our Father." Right away let's begin comparing this teaching of the meaning of the rosary to what we are taught by the word of God, the final authority on what is holy and what is unholy.
What does the Bible teach us about the practice of repeating words over and over in prayer? We read that the Lord taught his disciples saying, "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking" (KJV, Matthew 6:7).
Access to Jesus Through Mary
Explanations of the meaning of the rosary often include the teaching that man has access to Jesus through Mary. Is that what the Bible says? We read that Christ himself declared, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20).
You don't have to be a Bible scholar, a deep thinker, or philosophical to understand that the Lord Jesus himself said that he knocks directly at the door of a person's heart. If that person opens, the Savior will sup, or commune with the individual. This is only one of numerous scriptures that let us know that there's no need for a mediator between man and Jesus. We are taught, "There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5). What scripture of the Bible says that there is need for another mediator between the Eternal Mediator, Jesus himself? There is not a single scripture that says anything even close to that. What does this tell us about the teachings on the meaning of the rosary?
Mary the Mother of Believers?
Adherents to the use of the rosary tend to believe and teach that Mary is the spiritual mother of the members of the body of Christ. However, Christ asked, "Where is my mother? And who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand towards his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother" (Matthew 12:48-50).
Jesus said this after being told that his natural mother, Mary, along with his natural brethren, stood close by, waiting to speak to him. How could he have been any plainer in teaching against the belief that Mary is the mother of the members of his body (of believers)? Again, what is continually being revealed about the meaning of the rosary?
The Rosary Enables Righteous Living?
Once again, there is very obvious disagreement with scripture from the Holy Bible when we are told that praying the rosary brings peace to the soul and an authentic Christian lifestyle. We should first keep in mind that the rosary is not Christian because no part of the meaning of the rosary is in agreement with the biblical description of Christianity. King David, the psalmist wrote, "Thou (speaking to God) wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee..." (Isaiah 26:3). And Jesus already said, "Peace I leave with you..." (St. John 14:27). He spoke this to his disciples. He did not tell them to get peace through believing in what is taught as the meaning of the rosary.
When speaking of drawing close to God, man is instructed by the scripture of James 4:8. It reads, "Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you...." Scripture does not say that we need Mary or any object in order to draw close to God. And we do well to remember that nothing is to be taken away or added to the word of God (Deuteronomy 4:2).
An Angel of Light Is Not Always From God
Teachings on the meaning of the rosary, as well as on other practices, often are given credence if there has been a mystical experience or a miracle. What did the
Lord Jesus say about this? We read that he said, "...An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign..." (Matthew 12:39). And the apostle Paul warned, "...Satan himself is transformed into an ANGEL of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14). Finally, he warns us, "...Though we, or an ANGEL FROM HEAVEN, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8).
The gospel of the Holy Bible preached by the prophets and by the apostles does not agree with the things that are preached as the meaning of the rosary.
