Mary the Mother of Jesus Christ: What Does the Christian Bible Say about Her? - Part I
Perpetual Virgin?
Some people have been taught and believe that Mary the mother of Jesus Christ was a virgin all of her life. This teaching is in sharp contrast to what God's word says. We read, "Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife (Mary); and knew her not TILL she had brought forth her firstborn son; and he called his name JESUS" (KJV, Matthew 1:24-25).
The words "knew her not" refer to intimacy. Scripture plainly says that Joseph did not know Mary "TILL" she had birthed the Savior. The word "till" means that he eventually was intimate with Mary. We have further biblical proof that Mary the mother of Jesus Christ was not a perpetual virgin because she had children with Joseph. This is evident when we read the questions that the people asked about Jesus such as, "Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us?..." (Matthew 13:55-56). If Mary remained a virgin all of her life, how did she have sons and daughters?
Should Mary the Mother of Jesus Christ Be Worshiped?
Some have been taught that it is not only alright, but actually correct to worship Mary the mother of Jesus Christ. But, what does the word of God say about this? The scripture of Luke 11:27-28 reads, "And it came to pass, as he (Jesus) spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he (Jesus) said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it."
Mary the mother of Jesus Christ was truly called "blessed among women" in the scripture of Luke 1:42, so there is nothing wrong with saying that she was a blessed woman--blessed among all other women. Why then did Christ divert attention away from Mary when the woman shouted "Blessed is the womb that bare thee and the paps which thou hast sucked?" Because there is no salvation in Mary; rather salvation is in the first son that Mary birthed--Christ. The scriptures are forcefully pointing man's attention to the need to focus on the Son of God, not the woman who was chosen to give birth him. Any attempts to place focus and attention on Mary or anyone else instead of on the Savior is not of God. Who was lifted up on the cross at Calvary for the salvation of man? It was not Mary or St. Peter or St. Paul or anyone else. The Son of God is the one who was literally lifted up; therefore, he is the one who a person must lift up if he or she ever hopes to really know who Christ is. Jesus said, "...When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he..." (St. John 8:28).
