Future Nanotechnology in the Star Trek Original Episodes
What is nanotechnology and what does it have to do with science fiction? Everything. Trekies (fans) of the Star Trek original episodes were fascinated with the technological advances seen in the very entertaining episodes of the show which was set in the future. Dialogue between captain Kirk, his first officer Spock, and chief engineer Scotty, was actually scientific when they discussed the laws of Physics. Attentive viewers could learn as these three sought a way out of the many dangerous situations in which they were found.
Why are some people now saying that the science fiction in television of yesterday is rapidly approaching the real world of today, and will forever alter everyone's tomorrow? The intense interest of physicists, chemists and biologists in the future of nanotechnology has led to their discovery of the amazing, almost unbelievable potential power of this new science. To better understand why such claims are being made, at least a very basic knowledge of what nanotechnology is must be acquired.
What Is Nanotechnology?
"Nano" denotes one billionth. A nano-second is one billionth of a second; a nano-meter is one billionth of a meter. One meter is the equivalent to a little more than a yard. A background in Physics and/or Mathematics isn't necessary to realize that dividing a yard stick into a billion parts is practically inconceivable. Something measuring one billionth of a meter can't be seen even with a microscope.
Scientists who can successfully work with matter (things) on such a small scale can achieve what's loosely termed "molecular manufacturing." Everything in existence, animate and inanimate, is called "matter" and is composed of atoms which attract or repel other atoms depending on their electrical charge, thus forming molecules. Molecules continue to arrange themselves until the formation of a person or object is complete. This process is one that scientists hope to control at their will some day soon through nanotechnology.
The ability to manipulate molecules into the formation of objects would require a highly developed plan or program to follow. According to the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN), "The ongoing developments of molecular-scale electronics, sensors and motors are expected to enable microscopic robots with dimensions comparable to bacteria." Scientists propose that trillions of programmed nano-robots called "assemblers" would take care of the construction process using molecules to build them into the desired product. Is this not what the food synthesizer is on the star ship Enterprise in the Star Trek original episodes? Members of the crew needed only to press some buttons and wait a few seconds for the requested food to appear as though out of thin air.
The transporter room of the Enterprise is where the beaming of matter took place. The molecules of a man or object were manipulated to accurately and almost instantaneously transport him or it from one location to another based on coordinates.
If someone wants to walk into another room but is blocked by a wall, he must make an opening in the wall large enough for him to walk through. However, if the molecules of which he's composed could be temporarily separated, such nano-particles would be able to pass through the solid wall simply because of their size. If once on the other side, his molecules could be reassembled, he would reappear. Essentially, he would have been transported or beamed from one side to the other.
It is a fact that scientists devoted to the advancement of future nanotechnology are working with the idea of assemblers (nano-robots) to build whatever their minds can conceive. Why would they not be inspired to also work to have disassemblers? Not only would man come as close as he can to having creation power, he would also have the ability to beam anything and anyone to any place he desired, just like the future nanotechnology in the Star Trek original episodes.
Truth is not always stranger than fiction in these modern times. Science fiction movies and television shows not only entertain, they also offer a glimpse into man's diabolical and never ending quest to make himself equal with God. Some will argue that things such as a real-world food synthesizer would eliminate world hunger; therefore, nanotechnology should be viewed in a positive light. Were not the same claims made about genetically modified foods? How many still starve to death; and how many were seriously and fatally injured by consuming these "frankenfoods?" There are life-threatening problems with nanotechnology.
