The Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man: Torments of Hell?
It is in the passage of Luke 16:19-31 that we read about Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible. Verses 19 thru 25 say, "There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores. And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried. And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented."
The Rich Man and Lazarus Meaning
Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible is one of many parables that teach multiple truths. It might be used in biblical teachings on hell fire, on the natural branches of Israel (Jews according to the flesh), on the state of consciousness of the deceased, on injustice in this world, and other topics. However, there is a spiritual truth that Jesus taught in his parable of Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible that is often missed.
Did the rich man go to hell to be tormented simply because he did not give Lazarus food everyday? To say such a thing amounts to supporting the falsehood that an individual's good works earn him a place in heaven. Salvation is a gift from God that is given in response to belief (obedience to) on his Son, Jesus (Gal. 2:16, Rom. 5:15). Gifts are not earned. That is why they are called gifts.
Why did the rich man, though he was a son of Abraham, according to the flesh (verse 25), "wake up" in hell fire? The answer to this question about Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible is found throughout scripture. However, let's look at two scriptures that sum up the spiritual truth and warning in this parable in a very straightforward way. Mark 12:29-1 reads, "And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel. The Lord our God is one Lord. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself...."
This is the first of the two passages at which we'll look in our study of Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible. The fact that the rich man lived lavishly everyday (Luke 16:19) and cared nothing about the suffering of the beggar, Lazarus, is evidence that the love of God was NOT in him. The rich man did not keep the first commandment, which is to love God. Doing that would have caused the Spirit of God, who loved Lazarus, to dwell in him. Where the Spirit of God truly dwells, there is love for our neighbor. There is not one scripture in the Christian Bible that can be twisted to even attempt to support belief that those in whom there is no love of God will enjoy the presence and comfort of the Lord after death.
The second scripture at which we'll look for our consideration of Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible is that of 1 John 4:8, which says, "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." Those who do not know God have no biblical support for believing that they will awake in the comfort of the Lord in the afterlife. The rich man did not go to hell simply because he did not feed Lazarus each day. He went there because he did not keep even the first commandment to love God. Consequently, the love of God did not dwell in Him. In the afterlife, why would he expect to dwell eternally in the presence of the One he never came to love?
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
