Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Modern medical technology is usually not what enters your mind when you think of technology in general, but rather the invention of the many electronics we have that are steadily growing in power and shrinking in size. We also think of the amazing things that computer applications can accomplish. Nevertheless, the things that can now be accomplished with modern medical technology, such as a full face transplant, are also beginning to enter daily conversation.
It is national news that modern medical technology now allows even a full face transplant. According to the article, "First Full Face Transplant Successful In Spain," a farmer who shot himself in the face and who had been unable to breathe should not have to rely on a ventilator. Instead, he has received a new face to serve him the rest of his life. Cheekbones, lips, teeth, and a nose were all provided by a donor.
Barcelona, Spain is where the operation, performed by a team of thirty health care providers led by Joan Pere Barret, took place successfully and has made national news. The patient who is satisfied with his full face transplant has only to temporarily endure scars on his forehead and neck--scars that will be concealed in the future, if all goes according to plan. People marveled at the physical changes that plastic surgeons could predict with the use of computer programs developed to help advance modern medical technology, and that run on powerful platforms. What will the ability to perform a full face transplant cause us to see or have to contend with in the future?
There's almost always a potentially dark side to any technological advancement despite the positive effect it can have on lives. People who have facial injuries and disfigurement resulting from burns, accidents, birth defects, attempted suicide, or from being the victim of violence now have hope they might not have previously had. Of course, those who cannot afford expensive treatments and surgeries still tend to be left out of the benefits of modern medical technology such as plastic surgery and a partial or full face transplant.
Some are thinking of the not-so-positive side of these things. Will the ability of surgeons to perform a full face transplant entice the people who can afford their services to undergo surgery when it is not medically necessary just to have the face they have dreamed of having? A significant number of people willingly participate in body mutilation to give themselves horns in the head, teeth permanently shaped like those seen in the Hollywood vampire movies, and even visible tails. Will there be restrictions on surgeons that prevent them from allowing people to unnecessarily transform their physical appearance? Would such restrictions respected?
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
