Milk Substitutes: You Have Options

The arguments both for and against consuming dairy products can be convincing. If you are among the people who have chosen to abandon them, you are probably wondering what options you have for substitutes. Let's take a look specifically at milk substitutes, and learn a little about almond milk nutrition in particular. In a nutshell, each person will have to explore and find what works best for him or her. We just want to at least provide you with some starting points.

Milk substitutes come in many varieties, flavors, and sources. Among the most popular options in the United States are: nut milks, soy milk, coconut milk, and rice milk. Please note that we do not consider goat milk as a substitute for cow milk, because it is still the milk of an animal. Also, we neither promote vegetarianism nor veganism. We are simply providing basic information on options for milk substitutes.

The Nut Milks


The term "nut milks" makes it sound like a variety of nuts are used to make nut milk. The truth is, however, that in the stores you will probably find only almond milk. Many people are happy with their switch to this nut milk, which you might want to try in in your exploration of options. One of the benefits of almond milk, like almost any other milk substitute, is that you get just as much, if not more, calcium as you get with cow milk.

Almond milk nutrition generally provides significant amounts of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin A, as well as other nutrients. Please be aware, however, that most of these nutrients exist in the milk because it has been fortified. The fact remains that you can get as much, if not more, calcium consuming milk substitutes as you get consuming animal milk.

Read Ingredients


One thing we've notice with these milks is the need to pay close attention to ingredients that greatly affect taste and perhaps nutritional value for you. For example, some of them have been sweetened, flavored with vanilla or chocolate, or even contain preservatives if the milk is not kept refrigerated. We do not think highly of the sweetened milk substitutes. Animal milk does not have a sweet taste, unless it has been lactose reduced. Why should milk substitutes be sweetened when many people consume far too much sugar?

Also, the brand that you choose can make a huge difference. We purchased refrigerated, unsweetened almond milk of two different brands. The difference was like night and day in taste, appearance, and consistency. One had an almond color and tasted "funny" and did not at all look like milk. The other was white like milk, smooth, and tasted like one percent milk, very delicious. Once you find a milk you like, you might want to stay with that particular brand, unless of course you like to explore options.

Be Careful with Soy Milk


Unfortunately, soybeans are among the foods in the United States that have been more of a target for genetic modification than others. So, you'll want to be sure to thoroughly read the ingredient list. To be safe, it should clearly state that the soybeans used to make their milk substitutes are non GMO (have not been genetically altered in any way). The soybeans should also be organically grown.

Women might also want to take more precaution with soy products. They can greatly increase menstrual cramps, which can be avoided by simply avoiding soy milk substitutes when it is close to that time of month. Also, there is some concern that even moderate amounts of soy products can aggravate breast cancer or even increase a woman's chances of developing breast cancer. Therefore, we highly recommend that females consult their physician before regularly including soy milk or other soy products in their diet.
