Calvina, the young battered wife of Duane, is in desperate need of a new start in life. Will her jealous husband, the mad man with whom she had been unequally yoked, prove too much to ever hope for a chance of staying together--a chance to fix her troubled marriage?
We encourage you to read the two main character profiles before reading the first chapter. We can be so wrong in the strong initial opinions we form of people, which we see in The Beauty Of Staying Together (originally published under the title: Detour), a story based on true events. Understandably, there's much confusion in the minds of some people regarding whether milk is healthy or not--at least for adults to drink. That confusion can be cleared up simply by getting at least a basic understanding of why some are sounding alarms about milk. Understanding of the homogenized milk danger is a good place to start. Homogenized milk is justifiably being blamed for many health problems, including tooth decay and osteoporosis. Homogenization breaks up a very delicate enzyme present in milk into units so small that they can directly enter the bloodstream and once there, react in a negative way against the walls of the arteries. It might be said that this altered enzyme in homogenized milk "attacks" arterial walls.
The body responds by attempting to protect itself against this very real homogenized milk danger. How does it try to protect itself? It lays a layers of cholesterol to guard against the destructive action of the altered enzyme. It's no wonder so many people who drink milk, even low-fat and fat-free milk, suffer from high cholesterol, heart problems and atherosclerosis.
Why is milk even subjected to the process of homogenization? Simply to keep people from having to shake it! Homogenized milk was made to look consistent and smooth at the expense of public health. While there are also dangers associated with pasteurized milk, avoiding milk that has been homogenized is at least a step in the right direction toward good health. It might help to clear up confusion about milk drinking if people understand that the main problem is not with drinking milk itself; rather, the many unnatural processes to which it is subjected. An informed public, however, can change all of this simply by speaking up and out about what foods and drinks they want made available. They have the power because they are the consumers.
