Is Brahman God?
According to the doctrine of Hinduism, brahman is the unchanging and supreme reality that exists in, but also beyond, the changing world that we can see with the natural eye. This definition of brahman is what has caused some people to believe that brahman is God, including the God of the Christian Bible, the Almighty God of Israel. Do not believers in the Lord Jesus affirm that our God is unchanging (Malachi 3:6), and that he is supreme (Rev. 4:8)? Yes, we do. And, do we not teach that our God is the Creator of all things (St. John 1:4)? Yes, we do. Finally, do not the scriptures of the Christian Bible teach that God is the author of, exists in, and rules the spirit world? Yes, they do. The Lord Jesus spoke of heaven and hell in the afterlife. And, the book of Revelation gives the account of when a servant of God was banished to the island of Patmos where the Lord allowed him to peer into the spritual world of heaven. And, there are many more biblical passages that speak of the reality of the spirit world and the hereafter. Why then do we NOT say that God is brahman?
A Closer Look at Brahman
According to the legend behind the hindu understanding of brahman, a wise man instructed his son to toss salt into water after which he instructed him to retrieve the salt. Of coursre this was not possible as the salt had dissolved. It is said that this act served to demonstrate that brahman is like the salt. It is an invisible presence that exists in all things. Since the God of Israel is the Creator of all things, is he not in all things? If that question is answered in the affirmative, aren't we then left with the conclusion that brahman is God? No, we are not. Let's learn why.
Why Brahman Is NOT the God of Israel
The hindu concept of brahman speaks of a presence or a force that exists in all things of the natural and supernatural world. The God of spiritual and natural Israel is not an indifferent force. He is not simply a presence. He is an all wise being who thinks. We read, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord" (KJV Bible, Isaiah 55:8). Our God has and shows love. We read, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (St. John 3:16). The God of Israel can be angered. We read, "...God is angry with the wicked every day" (Psalm 7:11). Our Lord can be saddened. We read, "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God..." (Ephesians 4:30). Clearly, our Lord is not an indifferent force or presence as is brahman.
Brahman is not God; and God is not brahman. Brahman is said to be an indifferent force that does not love, cannot be angered, does not think, cannto be made sad, etc. The Lord is everything but indifferent. He is a specific being that talks, thinks, loves, experiences anger, can be made sad, holds all wisdom, and has a Son in whom is the only salvation to man; and so much more could be said. None of these things are, or can be said of the hindu concept of brahman, which is not God in any way, shape, or form.
What About the Presence of God in Nature?
Again, brahman is supposed to be supreme reality in all things. That means that brahman is in the air, waters of Earth, trees, mountains, animals, and everything else visible and invisible. So, since the Lord is Creator of all things, why should we NOT think that he also is in all things, especially in nature? Bible-believing Christians continue to maintain that brahman is NOT God because we read, "...Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but THE LORD WAS NOT IN the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but THE LORD WAS NOT IN the earthquake: and after the earthquake, a fire; but THE LORD WAS NOT IN the fire: and after the fire a still small voice" (1 Kings 19:11-12).
Reading just a few verses more of this passage reveals that the Lord was in the still, small voice. The Lord WAS the still, small voice. Let's remember that brahman is said to be a presence in ALL things. The Lord of Israel is NOT a presence in all things, not even in the things of nature that he created as we have just seen in the scripture of his word that we have just read. It is very clear that brahman is NOT God and that God is NOT brahman.
Let us not search for God in anything or anyone except the Son of God himself, the Lord Jesus Christ who has a voice, and speaks to our spirit to draw us to himself, our only salvation. Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock. If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3.20).
The door is the heart. The knocking is the call to salvation. To sup with Jesus is salvation and a true relationship with him. God is not brahman; and brahman is not God. Jesus is the true God, and eternal life (1 John 5:20).
