Spanish Majors: Get Translation Experience With Us
Heavenly Manna ministries currently (as of 2012) publishes text, audio, and video content in three languages: English, Spanish, French. And, we are expanding to other languages. This means that Spanish majors looking to get translation experience might want to volunteer with us to learn, and to sharpen the skills they have. If you are a student needing to complete a practicum and would like to receive credit for any work you do for us, please have your professor contact us. We will be happy to work with him or her, and with you in the gaining of real-world translaton experience. Please note that currently we are working exclusively with Spansh majors from around the world, not with majors in other languages.
From Amateur Translator to Professional
It is often said that the transition from amateur to professional is achieved only after the completion of a college degree and professional translation training. Furthermore, most people are told that they need certification, and years of translation experience. If you plan to work for a translation agency, it is highly recommended that you obtain all of those things in order to be seriously considered for employment. However, there are many "amateur" translators who earn a full or part-time income doing freelance work.
While the freelancer might not need the college degree, translation training, or certification, he or she certainly needs to obtain translation experience. In the old days experience was what counted. And, it is what should count today instead of outrageously expensive training that does not automatically make the "professional" a better translator than the "amateur." Heavenly Manna has seen bad professional translations and good amateur ones.
Gaining Translation Experience With Us
We are looking for Spanish majors who can translate at least one 450 - 600 word article from Spanish to English per month. They can of course choose to complete more per month if it is necessary to meet the requirements of a practicum.
Spanish majors who have attempted to get translation experience with us going from English into Spanish have consistently failed our tests. Consequently, all students will be assigned a project that is to be taken from Spanish into English, the student's native language. Inexperienced translators almost always find it easier to go from the language learned into the mother tongue, not the other way around.
