Spanish As an Official Language in the United States: What Is Your Opinion?
Spanish as an official language of the United States would have more impact on some native English speaking Americans than it would on others. Residents of the American cities that border Mexico are accustomed to being exposed to the Spanish language as though it already were official. In fact, it can be next to impossible to even get a job without fluency in both English and Spanish in those cities. Newspapers, television channels, radio stations, business establishments, and so much more offer their content, products, and services in Spanish. Would not having Spanish as an official language make things "official?"
Many are vehemently opposed to making Spanish official alongside English. Others are in favor of it. And, still others shrug their shoulders and think, "it's already unofficially official."
The Considerations
Some of the people who are opposed to having Spanish as an official language of the United States have stated their concerns and the reasons for their opposition. Among those reasons are the questions of language wars, pressure to become bilingual, the greater development of Spanglish (a mixture of English and Spanish), and a loss of American identity. Another issue that might arise would be the request for other languages such as Chinese or Arabic to become official in the United States.
People who are in favor of having Spanish as an official language foresee many changes that they view as positive. Among those changes are an increase in bilingualism in the nation, diminished "authority" of the English language, and a relaxation in public relations over language. The residents of Quebec, Canada know all too well that having two official languages can start, rather than end language wars.
