Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world

Are Machine translations by Google a Blessing or a Curse?

buenaSuerte.jpg

Machine translations, sometimes called computer translatiosn, are the output gained from software that reads content in a source language and renders, to the best of its ability, that content in a target language. This amazing technology has covered much ground within the last five years--so much so that some translators are understandably concerned that software will reduce, and sometimes replace the need for their services.

The Future of Machine Translations: Promising or Scary?

Many predict that instead of individuals and businesses having to pay a translator to translate their documents or manuscripts, they will hire someone who knows the source language to clean up their machine translations. In fact, some predict that a new, and much lower paying profession, will emerge as a result. Translators might be reduced to becoming translation editors. If businesses can save significant amounts of money by paying someone to edit machine translations rather than to translate from scratch, why would they not opt to do so?

Does this mean that automated translations, like so many software programs and robots that have robbed people of their jobs, are a curse on the economy? Are they a blessing for those who plan to save large sums of money by allowing software to do what once only a person could do?

The Threat Is Not Real, Or Is It?

Although it is logical to reason that machine translations will always be inferior to the work that a good translator can do, would that inferiority really matter at all times? We believe that, judging by the widespread use of computer translations on the Internet today, that quality is becoming less and less of a deciding factor.

As the world becomes smaller in terms of international dealings betweens businesses of all sizes, organizations, and individuals, the need for communication across language barriers grows. And, the need for absolute precision is not always an issue, especially if high translation costs have to be incurred to get that accuracy. Take for example a web page that an individual creates to provide information about the much needed preservation of heirloom foods. The web master might want to have his site content available in as many languages as possible.

If he is not earning an income from the site, it only makes sense that he would not be willing to pay translators to translate the site into various languages. Why should he? Machine translations would be a perfect solution for such a person and for so many others who do need content translated, but who will not, or can not pay the high costs of translation. Even those who want their multilingual content to be accurate have the option of saving bundles of money by having someone clean up the automated translation. And, that person would not need to be a professional translator with credentials.

A native speaker with the equivalent of a high school education, and who is a native speaker of the target language could do the job. Professional translators tend to sneer at this truth. But, the fact remains that many truly bilingual people can translate as well as, and sometimes better, than certified professionals.

Yes, machine translations sometimes are a real threat to translators. There will always be translation jobs that simply cannot and must not be entrusted to software. And, the flowery language of poems, songs, slang, etc. will probably always have to be translated by people. But, even that is only a speculation as we are continually amazed at what programmers are able to accomplish--or allow us to accomplish with their software.

Google Free Translations: A Blessing or a Curse?

There are a number of computer programs that translate. However, we specifically single out the Google free translator because of the sometimes shockingly high quality translations it produces. The software that is freely offered by the search engine giant is truly a blessing for some people who could not otherwise afford to have their documents translated. This same "blessing" might be considered a curse by others, namely translators, who are threatened by the growing usage of the software.

Why Some Christians Opt to Use Machine Translations

True, born again evangelical Christians are on a God-given mission. That mission is to share the gospel of Jesus with the world. This means reaching out to people who might not, and often do not speak their language. While many Christian ministries have the funds for professional translation services, many do not. And, sometimes those who can afford to pay, choose to use machine translations instead. Why?

Firstly, the money they save can be used for mission work such as the printing of tracts, Bibles, and other teaching materials. It can be used to help impoverished and persecuted Christians who live under governments who restrict the preaching of the gospel. But, there is another reason why hiring a translator might not be preferred. The gospel of Jesus is one of the most controversial truths ever spread. Also, in these last days, many followers of satanically inspired doctrines wear a Christian label.

If Christian content is translated by someone who is hostile to the gospel, there is a threat that subtle changes to the message will be made in the process. This is a risk that no true believer in Jesus would ever want to take. If a high quality piece of software such as Google free translations is used, the threat of ill will is removed--at least it is as things stand now (December 2012). It is best to have a less than perfect translation rendered by an indifferent machine than to have a perfect translation completed by someone who is anti-Christian

The Future of Google Free Translations

As of the writing of this article, machine translations by Google are totally free. And, they are continually perfecting the software. That sounds great. But, will that perfected software remain free? Perhaps there are plans to charge for the software once it is significantly better. No one but Google--and the Lord, knows that.

Food for Thought:

"And the whole earth was of one language and one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, thay they found a plain in the land of Shi'nar; and they dwelt there. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech" (KJV, Genesis 11:1-2, 4-7).
