Threat of Cloud Computing and the Mark of the Beast in the Bible
What exactly are the dangers of cloud computing? Some will answer that question by pointing out that the great concern for security and privacy is not without justification. Where there is danger, there is a threat--the threat of cloud computing. Proponents of cloud computing certainly admit that serious security risks as well as privacy issues are real. However, they are certain that with proper management of software stored on servers, and the use of highly advanced artificial intelligence, any threat can be eliminated.
Should we believe that? Technology today certainly is amazing. And perhaps with the use of smart technology such as fingerprint protection for sensitive data, any threat of cloud computing actually will be totally eliminated. But, are there dangers of cloud computing that really do NOT have to do with protecting data? Some believe that there are. And, some even believe that there could be a connection between the advancement of cloud computing and the introduction of what is known as the mark of the beast in the Bible Are these people paranoid Christians, or do they have reason to believe that the threat of cloud computing could be spiritual--at least in part?
The Mark of the Beast in the Bible
In the very informative Spanish language BBC article by Fiona Graham, Las Predicciones Tecnológicas Para 2013 (Predictions for Technology in 2013), we read of some amazing gadgets to be released--and of the concept behind them. These concepts have been linked to what more and more people are coming to believe to be the threat of cloud computing. For example, we learn that for the first time the world will have what are known as ProjectGlass computers with astounding features and capabilities. Users will be able to control interfaces simply by turning or nodding their head. This is approaching the technology seen in the science fiction episodes of the classic Star Trek, popular in the sixties!
In 2013 we also expect to see the release of Airwave glasses by Oakley. These glasses, to be worn by people who like activities such as skiing, are equipped with a screen that shows the friends who accompanied them into the mountains how many miles they have covered and even how long they were in the air when they last jumped! Are these glasses the precursor to the development of glasses that will allow people to some day soon have xray vision? Will wearing a pair of glasses allow others to see through the clothes of people? It is no wonder that some believe that there is a real threat of cloud computing.
But, what about the concepts that are disturbing more and more people? In the excellent BBC article, we read that cloud computing will, "help you to live your life. Google Now, for example, notifies you when you need to go to a meeting. And, it monitors traffic conditions" (English translation of original material). We also read that, "New labor practices will lead to more and more business (transactions) being sent to the cloud to be conducted in order to centralize systems, processes, and applications." Finally, we read that through cloud computing we will have access to, "data from sensors, social networks, and a highly personalized system for finding services and products" (English translation of original material). Now, let's see how this all might be connected to a threat of cloud computing and the mark of the beast in the Bible.
Personalization and Centralization: The Real Threat of Cloud Computing?
The biblical scripture of Revelation 13:16-17 reads, "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads. And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name."
According to some, the dangers of cloud computing include the rendering of highly personalized services and centralization. We've just read that cloud computing is the way to receive highly personalized service from cyberspace such as reminders of appointments and to receive data about the activities of another person such as is the case with the Airwave glasses. It is said that fingerprint protection technology will help to eliminate the threat of cloud computing as far as the problem of security is concerned. But, fingerprint technology is nothing short of being highly personal. And, it involves a part of the body.
What did we just read about the mark of the beast in the Bible? We read that it would be received in the right hand or the forehead--a part of the body. Technology does not get much more personal than that. And did we not also read that the day is coming that no man will be able to buy or sell without having taken the mark of the beast? Yes, that is what the Christian Bible says. What is the goal, or we should say, the threat of cloud computing? We know that it is a move toward carrying out business transactions in the cloud to CENTRALIZE them.
The scripture in Revelation warns that everybody in the world, regardless of status, will be required to take the mark of the beast in order to buy or sell. Buying and selling is the heart of conducting business. Many reasons are given to convince people that there is no threat of cloud computing; and that it is the way to go in the future. But, it also appears to be paving the way for the mark of the beast foretold in the Bible.
