The Peace of Christ through the Yoke of Christ

Jesus Said, "I Will Give You Rest"
The world is literally full of disturbed people who live in mental anguish and restlessness, and who are weary of life. Many of these same people have the things that most people would agree make life worth living: a family, friends, health, a successful career, and plenty of money. True believers in Jesus know that people who have everything in life can still suffer depression and discontentment, if they do not know Jesus in the pardon of their sins. Therefore, many true Christians believe that these restless people simply need the peace of Christ.
In the word of God we read that Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (KJV, Matthew 11:28). From what do people need rest? Millions of people need rest from worry, weariness of life, depression, restlessness, mental torment, confusion, anger, resentment, and so many other things. The peace of Christ is freedom from all that is not of God. This is why the Christian Bible says that truth, which is the Word of God, will make us free (St. John 8:32, 17:17).
The Peace of Christ Comes by the Yoke of Christ
Unfortunately, when many Christians speak of weary souls going to God to find rest, they tend to read only the 28th verse of the eleventh chapter of Matthew. Perhaps this is part of the reason why so many people say that even after attending church and reading the Bible they still do not really experience the peace of Christ. What could the problem be? No two situations are exactly alike, so generally there is no "standard" answer that can be given for everyone all of the time. If things were that simple, we would not have been told by God's word to depend on the guidance of His Spirit and also to learn his word, which requires years of serious study.
Nevertheless, there is a common reason why many do not experience the peace of Christ though they say they have sought the Lord. One thing that would greatly help to solve this problem is to understand that the peace of Jesus requires two things according to scripture. What are those things? We learn what they are if we do not stop reading at the 28th verse. Now, let's read Matthew 11:28 thru 11:30. It says, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."
What Is the Yoke of Jesus?
The two things that the Lord tells us to do are:
1. Learn from Him.
2. Take His yoke.
Because the yoke of Jesus is required to receive the blessing of the peace of Christ, it is imperative to understand what it is. A yoke is a frame or bar made of wood. It is used to link two animals, usually oxen, by the head to control them as they work the land. A yoke can also be a frame that is fitted to a person's shoulders to allow him to carry a load.
The principle meaning of "yoke" is to link together, to control, and to allow someone to carry a load or a burden. In the spirit world, the yoke of Jesus does what a natural yoke does in the physical world. It links the true servant of Christ so closely to the Lord that they become one. When Christ prayed for His servants, He said, "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us..." (St. John 17:20-21). We must understand this truth to understand the peace of Christ through the yoke of Christ.
Just as a natural yoke allows a person to carry a burden, so the yoke of Jesus allows us to carry what the Lord chooses to put on us. This teaches us that every believer has a work to do for God; and God is constantly concerned with the salvation and deliverance of lost souls. The apostle Paul said, "...For necessity is laid upon me; yea woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel" (1 Corinthians 9:16). Again, we must understand this truth to comprehend how to receive the blessing of the peace of Christ.
Finally, a yoke in the natural world is used to control oxen as they work. Likewise, the yoke of Jesus controls the true servant of Christ. The reason many people never experience the peace of Christ is because they will not do the two things that the Lord said must be done: learn of Him, and take His yoke.
To read the Bible is not the same thing as to truly learn the Bible with every intent to put into practice the truths that you learn. Regarding the yoke, remember that it does three things:
1. It links two animals together to work the land.
2. It is used to control animals.
3. It allows a person to carry a burden.
Likewise, the yoke of Jesus does three things:
1. It links the believer to His Savior (Christ).
2. The believer is controlled by His Savior through the yoke.
3. The believer uses the yoke to carry the burden given to him by His Savior.
Many people desire the peace of Christ, but they will not learn from the word of God. And, they will not accept the yoke of Christ. They do not want to be linked to the Savior, because that link often causes a break in the bonds they have with other people. They do not want to be controlled by the Lord. They do not want to carry the burden of the preaching of the Gospel to lost souls. This often causes conflict and many enemies.
Nevertheless, the peace of Christ does not come without the yoke of Jesus and the learning of the word of God. These spiritual things are inseparable. Some people had to become more weary of living WITHOUT the peace of Jesus than they were with keeping control of their own lives according to their own will before they would surrender all and gladly accept the yoke of the Lord.
