Communion with Christ by Eating the Lord's Supper?
Communion is the sharing of something with others. It can mean an intimate fellowship; and the word is sometimes used to refer to the act of receiving the sacrament. Let's keep in mind, however, that the eating of the Lord's supper does not automatically equate to having a genuine and close relationship with the Son of God. It is not a magical act that puts us in communion with Christ. How do we know this?
Eat and Drink to Have Communion with Christ?
We know that eating the bread and drinking the wine (grape juice) does not automatically grant us fellowship with Jesus because of what the scripture of 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 warns. We read, "Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself; not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep (are dead)."
To eat the Lord's supper when we know that we are not walking in obedience to Christ is a dangerous thing, because the disobedient to God are unworthy of communion with Christ. Therefore, they should not participate in the physical act that serves as a symbol of spiritual communion. The physical act of eating the Lord's supper should be performed only if there is true spiritual communion with Christ, which comes only through obedience to him. Jesus said, "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love..." (St. John 15:10). A loving relationship is one in which there is communion and closeness. We've just learned that closeness with Jesus is the reward of having kept his commandments, NOT of having eaten the sacrament.
The holy scriptures do NOT command us to eat the Lord's supper IN ORDER TO have communion with Jesus. Instead, the scriptures instruct us to eat the Lord's supper only IF we are already in communion with him through the keeping of his commandments.
