How Do We Have Communion with Christ?
Communion with Christ Through the Sacrament?
Sadly, many people mistakenly believe that they can achieve fellowship with Jesus by eating the Lord's supper, also known as the sacrament. However, even a glance at the scriptures reveals that the Lord's supper should be eaten only by the people who are ALREADY in fellowship with Christ, and NOT by those who are seeking to ENTER into a relationship with God.
The apostle Paul warned, "Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, UNWORTHILY, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord" (KJV, 1 Corinthians 11:27).
If the Lord's supper is nothing more than a "tool" to be used to enter into communion with the Son of God, why does scripture warn against eating it when we are outside of communion with the Lord? Everyone is born a sinner (Romans 3:23); this means that everyone is born outside of communion with God. So, if the Lord's supper is the way to enter communion with Jesus, everyone would have to eat unworthily at least once in order to begin communion with Christ.
That does not make sense in light of the warnings against eating and drinking unworthily, in other words, eating and drinking outside of fellowship with God. God wants fellowship with man, so he would not warn against something that would give man communion with Christ. This tells us that eating the Lord's supper is not the means of entering into fellowship with God.
Fellowship with Jesus the Biblical Way
Many people claim that they are seeking the Lord Jesus. However, they look for him in every place and thing except in the person of Christ. They follow traditions, make pilgrimages, perform rituals, recite prayers, and so much more. But, they never accept salvation in the manner that scripture tells us to do. Salvation is the very first step in beginning communion with Christ. It does not require following traditons, making pilgramages, performing rituals, reciting prayers, eating the Lord's supper, or anything else.
The scripture of Romans 10:9 gives us the simple instructions we need. We read, "...If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be SAVED."
There we have it. Belief in the heart and confession by mouth is the way to receive salvation.
To Whom Do We Confess?
Does the Bible tell us to confess sins to a priest, pastor, missionary, evangelist, preacher, or minister? Does the word of God tell us to confess to an image, a statue, or a sculpting? Does scripture instruct us to go to a church to confess or to be in a certain place or to confess at a certain time of the day? No, God's word does not tell us to do any of those things.
We are told to go directly to God, asking for forgiveness in the name of the only mediator that we have--Christ Jesus. We read that Jesus taught us to pray, "Our Father which art in heaven...forgive us our debts..." (KJV, Mat. 6:9,12). The asking of forgiveness is directed to God, not to any man or any thing. The sins that we have committed are against God. We might have wronged someone else in the commission of those sins, and certainly need to ask for their forgiveness. However, it is against God that we sin. It makes perfect sense that scripture tells us to go directly to God for cleansing from sin in the name of Jesus.
King David prayed directly to the Lord saying, "Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight..." (Psalm 51:2-3).
The only mediator we need in order to have or restore communion with Christ is Christ himself. Scripture teaches us, "For there is one God, and ONE MEDIATOR between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Tim. 2:5).
The lie that God is too powerful for sinful man to approach him to receive salvation and enjoy communion with Christ is also destroyed by biblical scripture. We read that the Lord Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock. If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Rev. 3:20).
The door is the heart. And, to sup with the Lord is to have communion with Christ. When Jesus says that he is knocking at the door of the heart, he cannot be any more direct in telling us that he is not a God who limits himself to dealing with people through other people, traditions, objects, images, rituals, or anything else. Jesus does not live in objects, images, sculptings, traditions, pilgramages, rituals, recital of prayers, or anything else except the heart and mind.
