When Esau Sold His Birthright to Jacob
What Is the Birthright?
New converts to Christianity might not know what a birthright is. In a nutshell, it is special blessing from God that went to the firstborn male. It is an Old Testament shadow of salvation. However, keep in mind that shadows of salvation are not salvation themselves. Also keep in mind that the firstborn male child who is the firstborn in the natural world, is not always the firstborn in the spirit realm. In other words, scripture demonstrates that sometimes it was the younger brother who received the birthright as was the case with Jacob and Esau. This is most important to understand when discussing when Esau sold his birthright.
Jacob, Rebekah and Trickery
Many Christians, when referring to the account of what took place between Jacob and Esau concerning the birthright of Esau, say that Jacob stole Esau's birthright. But, is that really what the word of God says--that theft took place? No, it is not. The Bible says that Esau SOLD his birthright. Let's first take a look at why it is so often said that Jacob
stole the birthright.
The 27th chapter of the book of Genesis gives the account of the trickery and deception employed by Jacob and his mother, Rebekah against Esau. When it came time for Isaac (the father of Jacob and Esau), to pronounce the blessing on Esau, Jacob took Esau's place. Consequently, it is said that Jacob stole Esau's birthright. You can read the account for yourself.
A Theft or a Sale?
True Christians who are seeking to understand the sometimes very profound spiritual truths must be careful to see things as God reveals them in his word, not as man presents them. The scriptures say that Esau SOLD his birthright. They do NOT say that Jacob stole the blessing. There is a huge difference between theft and a sale. One is illegal; the other is not.
We read, "And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint. And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint. Therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, SELL me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he SOLD his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way. Thus Esau despised (thought very little of) his birthright" (KJV, Genesis 25:29-34).
Esau sold his birthright. This is why he was called profane (wicked) in the New Testament. He thought so little of the precious blessing of God that he sold his birthright for one meal. How Shameful. We read, "Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat SOLD his birthright" (Hebrews 12:16).
Keep in mind that the simple fact that Esau sold his birthright does NOT mean that he sold salvation. Again, the birthright was just a shadow of the great blessing that salvation is. It was not, is not, and never will be salvation itself. Only the Son of God is actual salvation.
