Enemies of the Gospel in Our Families and in the Church
We've All Been Enemies of Christ
The apostle Paul, in the fifth chapter of the book of Romans, spoke of the work of reconciliation of sinful man back to God through the death of Christ. He reminds that God provided the sacrificial Lamb while men and women, who are born sinners, were enemies of Christ. This is why true worshipers of the Lord say, "We love him, because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). The enemies of Christ, however, are not necessarily the same people who are enemies of the gospel of Jesus.
Identifying Enemies of the Gospel
Christians, particularly those who are active in evangelism in obedience to the scriptures (Mat. 28:19-20), often are opposed by the enemies of the gospel. Their opposition can be found in the work place, in schools, public places, and among acquaintances in a variety of situations. Opposition presents in various ways such as verbal attacks, being ostracized, unfair treatment by superiors, and actual physical attack in some cases. Typically, it is the members of the body of Christ in nations where those who fight against the gospel work within a government that is extremely hostile toward Christianity.
Obviously, these people are not difficult to identify. However, there are two more groups in which there can be found very dangerous enemies of the gospel. Those groups are family members, and members of various churches that claim to be Christian. Jesus spoke very plainly when he issued warnings about the enemies of the gospel.
He warned, "Think NOT that I am come to send peace on earth. I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes (enemies) shall be they of his own household" (KJV, Mat. 10:34-36).
Some members of the persecuted body of Christ in nations where believers in Jesus are martyred for their faith have been turned over to authorities by their relatives. Some of their relatives were enemies of the gospel. However awful it might sound, this is a truth that was given to forewarn believers that they not underestimate the ferocity of some foes of the gospel.
The other group that often is overlooked as an enemy against Christianity is some people who actually profess to be Christian. The Lord Jesus told his followers, "They shall put you out of the synagogues. Yea, the time cometh that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me" (St. John 16:2-3).
Persecution and murder of Christians by "Christians" has already begun to take place. Again, the Lord strongly forewarned his servants about the shocking and often hideous works of the enemies of the gospel, no matter who they may be.
