Cry Aloud and Spare Not: Preach the Gospel
The Biblical Command to Preach the Gospel
Followers of New Age "Christianity" may speak pleasant words about Jesus, but the vast majority of them find it very distasteful to preach the gospel. They might be more than willing to speak of the
love of God, but not against the sins of which man is warned in his word, the Bible. The scripture of Isaiah 58:1 reads: Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
The message is clear, yet it is often rejected for a variety of reasons. What is more is that the biblical command to preach the gospel is repeated throughout the New Testament as well.
Why Some People Refuse to Cry Aloud and Spare Not
When Christian believers are obedient to the instructions: lift up thy voice like a trumpet, they will be met with great opposition, criticism, scorn, and sometimes violence. This is why Jesus warned his disciples, saying, "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake..." (Matthew 10:22). Why are Jesus' followers hated for his name's sake? They are hated for the reason why they hated Christ himself. Christ preached the gospel. He fulfilled the commandment of God to cry aloud and spare not. We read, "The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil." Reluctance to be the target of scorn, however, is not the only reason to not cry aloud and spare not.
Some Christians refuse to preach the gospel because they have not fully embraced the doctrine of Christ themselves, rather some have mixed Christ with antichristian doctrines and man's philosophy. Phrases such as, "live and let live," "I take the good from all religions," and "I don't believe in self-righteousness" are all signs that such an individual is almost always unwilling to cry aloud and spare not to preach the gospel. True Christianity does not revolve around the philosophy of live and let live.
Jesus told believers, in no uncertain terms, to preach the gospel. He said, "...Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).
Sadly, a good number of Christians are
ashamed of the gospel, which is why they don't preach it. Perhaps they have forgotten that the Lord said "Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation: of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels" (Mark 8:38).
Shame also results at times when Christians who are unable to "defend" the faith, cry aloud and spare not, and then aren't able to scripturally answer difficult, but legitimate questions about God and his word. None of these reasons, however, is an excuse to be hostile to the Lord's command to preach the gospel, to cry aloud and spare not. The Lord will give the strength to endure opposition, the boldness to lift us thy voice like a trumpet (Philippians 4:13), and the wisdom to answer questions (James 1:5).
Based on true events, The Third Man by Angela Sheffield, brings the Bible up close and personal as the characters face real issues of life: Betrayal, deceit, romance, bitterness, anger against God, hopelessness, will power, perplexity, triumph, unforgiveness, mental illness, and the "Alcohol made me do it" excuse.
