Samson and Delilah Love Story in the Christian Bible: What Do We Learn?

The Samson and Delilah love story is recorded in the Old Testament book of Judges. Many Christians are only vaguely familiar with the story, while others have never heard of it. In a nutshell, Samson was a type (shadow) of Christ, who served as a deliverer of Israel from oppression by their enemies, the Philistines (see the book of Judges, chapters 13 thru 16). He possessed supernatural strength from the Lord, which was directly linked to his being a Nazarite to God from the womb. Therefore, his hair was never to be shaven for his strength to remain(Judges 13:5, 16:17).
Samson fulfilled his God-given mission to deliver Israel from the Philistines. However, he went through great suffering that could have been avoided.
Samson and Delilah Love Story: A One Sided Love
In the Bible we read, "And it came to pass afterward, that he (Samson) loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. And the lords of the Philistines came up into her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him. And we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver" (KJV, Judges 16:4-5).
As we continue reading the biblical passage, we clearly see that the Samson and Delilah love story was one sided. Samson was the one who loved Delilah; Delilah did not love Samson. We read, "And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee. And Samson said unto her, if they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man. Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson..." (Judges 16:6-9).
Loud and Clear Betrayal
This Samson and Delilah love story reveals that Samson easily broke the withs. Delilah then attempts to make him feel guilty by not revealing to her the secret of his great strength. All of the signs that Delilah did not love him, and even had betrayed him were right before his eyes. She asks him about his strength. When he falls asleep, she binds him with withs. When he awakes, the Philistines are upon him; and all she can say is, "...Thou hast mocked me, and told me lies. Now tell me, I pray thee wherewith thou mightest be bound" (Judges 16:10).
The Samson and Delilah love story reveals that Delilah again asked Samson how he could be overpowered. Each time he gave her an answer, he found himself with that "answer" done to him and an attack of the Philistines. The signs of betrayal at the hands of Delilah loomed before him. He chose not to see them. Delilah pestered him daily regarding the secret of his strength. Finally, he told her that if his head would be shaven that he would loose his strength.
Why would Samson NOT think that as soon as he fell asleep, Delilah would shave his head and call to the Philistines? Because he did not want to think that truth, though it was right before his eyes. The very sad part of the Samson and Delilah love story is that Samson did awake to find his head shaven--and his strength gone. He was captured, blinded, imprisoned, mocked, and terribly afflicted for years at the hands of the Philistines. The truth is that he allowed Delilah, who cared nothing for him, to bring him down. In fact, he cooperated with her, which led to his great suffering.
The Modern Samson and Delilah Love Story
There are many people, including Christians, who are involved in a modern Samson and Delilah love story. The signs that they are not loved are before their eyes, but they choose not to see. Sometimes, there is downright betrayal, but they still choose not to see. Unfortunately, many have suffered, and will continue to suffer the consequences of willful blindness to the truth when it is not pleasant. Some will even go to an early grave. You know when you are not loved. People with any life experience should know when they are being betrayed. You cannot make someone love you. This does not pertain strictly to romance. It pertains to ANY relationship.
