Christian Help for Women in Abusive Relationships
If there truly is help for women in abusive relationships, why does the serious and dangerous problem of domestic abuse continue? There is more than one answer to that problem. First, many people, including psychologists, social workers, and Christian leaders, never deal with the reasons why women stay in abusive relationships. When the roots of problems are allowed to flourish, the whole weed can prosper. So, is there any real help for women in abusive relationships? Yes, there is.
Directly to the Abused Woman
Many people say that "The gods help them who help themselves." While there is only one living God, the truth is that the Lord helps them who help themselves. This rings true even when discussing the topic of help for women in abusive relationships. This message is directly to the women in such serious, and often dangerous, situations. First, we very strongly suggest that you read, Why Women Stay In Abusive Relationships (See link at end of this article). As you read, you will know which reasons pertain to you.
It's easy to lump all women in abusive relationships together. However, such a group is composed of individuals. Evaluate yourself; and be honest with yourself. If you don't genuinely want help, you won't be helped. If you do want help, continue reading.
Self Help for Women in Abusive Relationships
Now that you've decided to help yourself, rest assured that others will come to your aid. Don't expect to get step-by-step instructions in one article. But, expect and take on a new outlook and gear yourself up to be a strong woman who will no longer be a victim of abuse--or another statistic.
Help for women in abusive relationships begins with you taking a realistic look at ALL of your resources. They might be very few, but you have some type of resources. Do you have any money at all, even enough to get a ticket out of town if need be? Do you have belongings that you can sell?
The first step you take must be made by faith no matter how frightened you might be of being able to survive on your own. Ask for help. The Christian Bible records the words of the Lord Jesus who said, "Ask, and it shall be given you. Seek, and ye shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened unto you" (KJV, Mat. 7:7). As you ask the Lord for help, you can ask people for help. But, remember that the word of God tells everyone who names the name of Christ to depart from iniquity (sin) (2 Tim. 2:19 ). If you have never had a relationship with the Lord, please take note of the recommended reading at the end of this content.
Self help for women in abusive relationships must remind of the downfall that silly pride can bring. In the start of your new freedom, lack of adequate income is often a problem. This requires modest living. Nevertheless, you'll want all of the means possible of keeping in communication with people who are able and willing to help you.
Purchase a basic cell phone that does not require a service under contract, but allows you to pay as you go. Virgin Mobile is one such service. Obtain an email address and learn the basics of surfing the Internet where you can look for and apply for employment. Everyone can obtain a totally free email address from services such as Juno.com. Almost every library in the United States offers totally free access to the Internet. If you can't afford a car; and if it is safe to ride the bus, don't have too much pride to ride the bus, or to ride a bike. You might have to get clothes from a clothing room or a second-hand store. Cook meals from scratch; it is always more economical.
It is very easy to become frustrated with trying to survive financially in an economy with very few jobs. If you don't have a skill, ask yourself what you would like to do for a living with the thought of self-sufficiency (working for yourself) in mind. No, this is not an impossibility.
Heavenly Manna has a member on board who has personally experienced being a battered wife, financially destitute, homeless, without an education, and a single mother. Today, Vanessa Winters holds a college diploma in administrative assistance, and is a certified Christian life coach who works from her beautiful home in the Midwest. She has raised three children, one of whom is ordained in the non-denominational church, holds an A.A.S. degree in computer science, and is an advanced emergency medical technician.
Self help for women in abusive relationships is something that Ms. Winters had to muster up the strength to do. The Lord enabled her to survive and to come out victorious. If you are willing to receive help for women in abusive relationships, and to help yourself, you will also be able to share your testimony of victory.
