Warning Signs of Abusive Relationships from a Christian Perspective
Warning signs of abusive relationships include: extreme jealousy, attempts to change your style of dress, attempts to prevent you from working a job, and attempts to prevent you from having friends. Of course there may be other signs. However, any of these signs should almost always be a cause for the woman to have concern.
Extreme Jealousy
A certain amount of jealousy in the man is normal. But, extreme jealousy is dangerous, and can prove fatal. If you neither have a reputation of being unfaithful nor have shown unfaithfulness, he should not be extremely jealous. If he is, you will always be under suspicion, which translates into one of the warning signs of abusive relationships. Say goodbye to the possibility of having a male friend. Say goodbye to enjoying conversation with males, even if they're in public. Don't let your eyes focus too long on males, particularly if they are around your age.
If you are deemed guilty of unfaithfulness in his eyes, he can quickly turn into judge, jury, and executioner. Women have gone to an early grave because they chose to ignore the warning signs of abusive relationships, such as extreme jealousy. An envious mind can be capable of the lowest acts.
Proverbs 14:30 warns, "...Envy (is) the rottenness of the bones.
Abandon Your Style of Dress
The Christian Bible instructs women to dress themselves in modesty (1 Tim. 2:9). This does not mean that women have to walk around veiled, with long sleeved blouses/shirts, or dresses/skirts so long that they drag her shoes. She simply should dress in modesty.
One of the warning signs of abusive relationships is attempts to change the way you dress. If you wore make-up when he approached you, why should he advise you to stop wearing make-up? This is just an example of attempts to control your style of dress. Often such attempts are a reflection of extreme jealousy. If he was attracted to you when he saw you, he knows that other males also will be attracted to you.
Don't Work a Job
Another of the warning signs of abusive relationships involves him not wanting you to work outside of the home. If children are involved, they might be used as an attempt to convince you that you should not have a job. "You need to stay at home with the kids." "Why can't women just be satisfied with woman's work?" Statements such as these often are made by controlling men. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with both men and women preferring that women stay at home to raise children, beware that sometimes the children are simply used to formulate a reason why the woman should not work. Also, if you don't earn your own money, it might be easier for him to control you through finances.
The Christian Bible lets us know that women of God not only can have jobs, sometimes they are even entrepreneurs. We read, "And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God..." (Acts 16:14). Lydia, a Christian woman, was a sales person.
Don't Have Friends
The last of the warning signs of abusive relationships at which we'll look is his attempt to keep you from having friends. If your friends are truly a bad influence on you and your dealings with him, then you might do well to seek valuable friendships. The point is that something is wrong if he does not want you to have any friends at all or wants you to be isolated from your family.
The Christian Bible says that a true friend loves through thick and thin (Prov. 17:17). In a world in which misery abounds, having true friends is a good thing. They are a blessing from the Lord. Warning signs of abusive relationships serve a purpose--to prevent downfall and tragedy. Many women in abusive relationships chose to blind their eyes and to turn a deaf ear to the signs. Remember that warning comes before destruction.
